SAQLAWI HORSES

    THE SAQLAWI STRAIN

Davenport Saqlawis trace in tail-female through the mare Saleefy 70 to *Urfah 40, perhaps the most important mare in the importation. *Urfah is registered as of the Jidran substrain, but recent translations of her huja, or desert documentation, indicated that she was of the al 'Abd substrain.

The Saqlawi strain is noted for an air of elegance, relatively flat musculature in some individuals, upright neck carriage, and a well-developed forehand. Davenport Saqlawi heads tend to have the most prominent part of the facial profile (jibbah) placed somewhjat lower than the Kuhaylans, causing the "dished" aspect of the profile to be further below the eyes and thus more apparent. Hind leg structure of the Saqlawis as viewed from the side may be somewhat straighter than that of the Kuhaylans, and when viewed from the rear the hocks may be a little closer together.

Some Davenport Saqlawis are textbook examples of Saqlawi type. However, all Davenport Saqlawis have strong Kuhaylan pedigree elements, with the result that many of them have features also associated with Davenport Kuhaylan breeding, resulting in a vary attractive intermediate horse which still retains overall Saqlawi character.

Horses of the Saqlawi strain but in the non-Tripoli breeding group are shown later as part of the non- Tripoli group, of which they are also a major component.
