Yep! I am involved in GeoCities. Why? Well that's what this page is all about. Have you ever just considered becoming a Community Leader? Got a bit scared off at the unknown part of it? Here are the brass tacks as they say. The nitty gritty and all that. Why did I become involved and why do I stay involved?

I first got a Free Home Page in GeoCities back in December of 1997. That page was located in Heartland Valley. Well let me tell you, I was new to computers, new to the Internet and new to GeoCities. Everything that went wrong I figured was my fault, my stupidity and lack of knowledge. I was really wrong!! Hehe!! The very first thing that happened was I couldn't find Heartland Valley! Then I couldn't find the File Manager! Fact was they were gone. REALLY! GeoCities was building so quickly back then and help was extremely hard to come by. Like almost all of you I started writing to people on the Community Leader list and more than half of those addresses were bad. So I promised myself, if ever I get this mess figured out I would help anyone I could with their problems!
Well, I figured it out, lost my page in Valley but I got a new one in Estates and have happily kept it ever since. By March, some of the things I thought were impossible seemed so easy! So I applied to become a Community Leader. Actually I thought I was signing up for what was called a "neighborhood watch" and it turned out to be a Community Leader Application. And by golly here I am!
What is a Community Leader? Well let's start out with this-we are generally called CL's to make it shorter and easier to communicate. A CL is a volunteer who offers their extra time to assist Homesteaders in building and maintaining their pages, and with technical problems that may arise in GeoCities. We form and join "committees" that offer everything from awards to support to just plain fun for people who build their websites in GeoCities. We have meetings on a weekly basis and discuss problems Homesteaders are having so we can see if GeoCities can do something to make things easier for all of us. We go through the blocks in our spare time looking for pages that have that little extra effort put in them and then suggest an award of some kind of recognition.
On occasion we come across illegal content or offensive content that doesn't abide by GeoCities guidelines and we must report these pages to our "superiors". Takes a few seconds and we have helped keep GeoCities childsafe another day.
In Heartland, we are lucky enough to have this wonderful extended family among the CL's. We celebrate together when happy events occur and we all shed our tears together when one of us has suffered a loss. Talk about hands across the Internet! I really believe we have crossed all barriers in distance because I swear there are times when you can feel the warmth that glows between us. I am happy being a CL in Heartland, and have taken on Petsburgh when it first opened so we can start another chain of friends. I recently had to have shoulder surgery, just as an example, and if you want to take a moment, go HERE and see what was waiting for me when I got back online. The support, family atmosphere, teamwork, and commaradery is beyond anything I ever expected a year ago when I first became interested.
This past Christmas, I had so much fun I couldn't believe I was the same person who for the last twenty some odd years hated to see the Holidays even come around! My Family lives 800 miles away and the Christmas Holidays brought the kind of weather that made that kind of travel impossible. But this year, I felt surrounded by family! The cards and little gifts that came, the laughter we have all shared at the meetings, and even GeoCities surprised us with a beautiful card and many thoughts.
So, are you thinking about becoming a CL?
If laughter is something you enjoy, if you believe you can never have enough friends, if you want to be creative and learn new things and if you want the best support group in the world at your fingertips, then you would LOVE to be a CL! Do you have a special gift? -whether it's gab or art or just a great listener- there is always someone wanting to learn more! The group of CL's in Heartland are so very versatile and so vast in their differences, but yet they are one in the same soul.
I am not trying to convince you, I think you may well convince yourself, I just happened to realize the other night after talking to a Homesteader, that a lot of people really do not understand how much fun we actually have and though they have considered becoming a CL they were put off because it seems so .......responsible! I can guarentee you, any responsibilty we take on is completely volunteer, we do it because we want to not because GeoCities will take away our home page!! Really I had one poor lady who honestly thought that! We cannot be fired, we are after all volunteers, We do have a responsibilty to report once a week on what we have been doing or what committees we are on but that takes about three minutes. If we get an email from someone concerning a problem we are completely at a loss on, we just contact our friendly Co-Liaison and they help us get the help we need.
Seriously, I have never enjoyed anything as much as I have enjoyed being a CL and I look forward to being in GeoCities when they cross the ten million mark! As I look to my first year as a CL in GeoCities, I feel a huge sense of pride. And I am grateful. They have brought me a family of friends I never knew could exist.
Think about it, if you are interested in signing up, go here..Apply Here!
Join the family and share the fun!
