The First Sorrowful Mystery
- The Agony in the Garden

Jesus, knowing what lay before, him agonizes in the garden and receives strength from His Father to endure his fate.
"  Then he withdrew from them, and knelt down and prayed.  'Father if you are willing, take this cup away from me.  Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.'  Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.  In his anguish, he prayed even more earnestly.  And his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood."  - Luke 22:41-44
Reflection:  O Lord Jesus, how my heart aches at the thought of your anguish and sacrifice for me!  Let me follow your example and turn to you in prayer for strength in my own times of need.
The Second Sorrowful Mystery - The Scourging at the Pillar

Jesus, tied to a pillar endures ruthless scourging with a whip.

"  They had Jesus bound and handed him over to Pilate.  Pilate questioned him, 'Are you the king of the Jews?'  Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; but yes I am a king. I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.' 'Truth?' said Pilate, 'What is that?'; and with that he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find no case against him.  So I shall have him flogged and then let him go'  Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged."
- Mark 15:1-2, John 18:36-38; 19:1
Reflection:  O Lord Jesus, my sins, regardless how large or small, are like yet another strike with the whip; each causing you more pain.  Forgive me Lord for my transgressions and let me remember how much anguish each of my sins causes you.
The Third Sorrowful Mystery - The Crowning With Thorns

Jesus is mocked, spat on and crowned with a wreath of thorns.

"  The soldiers led him away to the Preatorium.  They then stripped him and dressed him up in purple.  And having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his right hand.  To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'  And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head."  - Matt 27: 28-30
Reflection:  O Lord Jesus, give me the strength to follow your example of courage and dignity when faced with persecution for my love of You.
The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery   - The Carrying of the Cross

Jesus carrys the cross up the hill to Golgotha to face his own crucifixion.

"  Then they handed him over to be crucified.  So they took Jesus, and carrying the cross himself, he went out to what was called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha."  -  John 19: 16-17
Reflection:  O Lord Jesus, you carried the cross heavy with the sins of the world.  Give me the strength to follow your example and to carry the crosses of my own life with the fortitude in which you carried yours in order to give us eternal life with you.
The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery - The Crucifixion

Jesus our Lord, dies on the cross.
" It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun.  Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.  Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit'; and when he had said this he breathed his last."  - Luke 23: 44-46
Reflection:  O Lord Jesus, you died so that we may have eternal life in Heaven with you.  May I always be worthy of your sacrifice.
