This information provided by Chris Herrington whose parents obtained a copy of the original docket book in the Archives in London, thus providing the extra details above. In exchange for their service, the indentured servants received their passage paid from England, as well as food, clothing, and shelter once they arrived in the colonies. During the time of his indenture, the servant was considered his master’s personal property and his contract could be inherited or sold. The usual term of the indenture was from 4 to 7 years, but may have been longer. If a servant contracted to be taught a specific trade or skill or an education, the contract length would increase. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Westmoreland Resolves 1765 - Signing of the Westmoreland Resolves (not to pay the Stamp Act tax) at Leedstown, on the Rappahanock River, Westmoreland Co, VA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- York County, Virginia Formed 1634 (Renamed in 1643 from Charles River County) County Seat is YORKTOWN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Library of Virginia Index to York County Wills and Administrations (1633-1811) John Harrington *** Will probated 24 Aug 1675 Exors bond rec. 24 Aug 1675 ================================================================================================== EARLY NAMING CONVENTIONS IN THE OLD DOMINION OF VIRGINIA Child: - - Named for: 1st son: - - - - father's father 2nd son: - - - - mother's father 3rd son: - - - - father 4th son: - - - - father's oldest brother 5th son: - - - - father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother 1st daughter: - - mother's mother 2nd daughter: - - father's mother 3rd daughter: - - mother 4th daughter: - - mother's oldest sister 5th daughter; - - mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
