Rattlers And Bulldozers

Snakes lack ears, but no one is certain that they are totally deaf. At any rate, they are very sensitive to vibrations of the ground. The movement of bulldozers at work creates strong vibrations which stir up rattlers (and other snakes) and set them in motion. Shuffling one's feet while walking in the woods may also alert a rattlesnake in the vicinity, causing it to crawl away or reveal itself by its rattle, thus avoiding a potentially nasty confrontation.
