Do
you want to learn a few new baking soda tips? How about how to make
some of your own cleaning products? Want to know a couple of good
brands of environmentally friendly cleaning products (I don't work for
these companies...I just like their products)? That's what this page
is all about. How I clean my home and how I've dealt with the little
problems that arise in life. Lets get on with it.....

I know it's a little scary
when you begin to consider switching from your usual cleaners to environmentally
friendly ones. You are used to the pine fresh, antiseptic smell when
you wash your floors, the heavy perfume smell on your laundry and the lemony
fresh smell when you do your dishes. Remember that this is just what
you've learned and you are conditioned to feel that things are clean
when you smell these smells but you can un-learn these things too.
I was amazed at how simple it was to switch over. You may say that the
laundry detergent is too expensive but it balances itself out with what
you save using vinegar and baking soda when you can and your family reaps
the benefits with better health. It is DEFINITELY worth it!!!
Hydrogen
Peroxide
-use this in your
laundry instead of chlorine bleach.
-use to disinfect
instead of chlorine bleach. I use it to clean my water cooler my
bird cages etc.
-supposedly has
healing properties...do a search and see what you find out.
Baking
Soda
-use to scrub your
sink and tub.
-use as a deodorizer
in your fridge or freezer.
-use to deodorize
your carpet by adding 25 drops lavender essential oil to add fragrance
to one cup of baking soda. Mix well and sprinkle over your carpets, leave
for a couple of hours then vacuum. Leaves your carpets smelling fresh
without any chemicals.
-treat you house
for flees by mixing 1/2 teaspoon of tea tree oil in 1 cup of baking
soda and sprinkling it over rugs, around baseboards etc. Leave on
for as long as you can stand it...at least a couple of hours. Vacuum
up all the soda. I got rid of a little flee problem this way.
-sprinkle baking
soda on the dirty dishes as they are piling up in the sink if you won't
be able to get to them right away. Load them into the dishwasher
and they will come out sparkling.
Note: I have used old spice
bottles to sprinkle the rugs but my favourite is to use a mason jar with
holes punched into the lid with a nail and hammer.
Vinegar
-mix with water
in a spray bottle to clean windows, counter tops, toasters, stove, fridge
etc. Add a few drops of lavender or orange essential oil to add a
pleasant fragrance or tea tree oil to help disinfect.
-use in rinse water
to help rinse out harsh detergents.
-wash the floor
with a bit of vinegar in water.
-spray some vinegar
diluted with water and scented with a pleasant smelling essential oil into
the air as an air freshener.
There are other things I
clean with every now and again. I occasionally use borax in my wash
as a laundry booster. I have a friend who makes lemonade with fresh
lemons then boils the lemon remains and uses the water to clean just about
everything. Vaseline rubbed into the dash etc. of a car really shines
it up well. I use Simply clean dish soap to wash the van and
occasionally to wash the floors.
Brand
Names
I Promise that I don't
work for any of these companies but I am happy with their products so it's
worth mentioning them here. I use President's Choice green bleach
(hydrogen peroxide) instead of chlorine bleach and am really happy with
my wash. It doesn't' whiten quite as well as bleach but I can live
with that. Simply Clean is a great supplier of cleaning products.
I use their laundry detergent and their dish soap. My favourite bathroom
cleaner is by Caeran. It works everywhere from the tub to the toilet
and it's great stuff.
