Hornbook of Virginia History

An extinct County, probably named by Adam Thoroughgood, a local resident, for the English County. Formed from Lower Norfolk County in 1691 with Portsmouth as the county seat.  It was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk in 1963 to form the city of Chesapeake.  The area of Norfolk County encompassed the present day cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake.

Chesapeake was named for the Chesapeake Bay

Parishes: Elizabeth River Parish (1691- ), Portsmouth Parish (1761- ), Saint Brides Parish (1761- )

A Guide to the Old Dominion

The first county courthouse, erected 1691-93, stood on land later part of Norfolk City, and was burned by Dunmore in 1776.
