I'm not going to try to explain the complex gene structure of the mouse because there are so many genes to take into account. Since mice have been captive bred longer than gerbils they have a great deal more mutations than gerbils do on their colour genes. Also they have more genes that control colour(or so it appears). It could be that they have the same number of colour genes but we just haven't found all the gerbil genes yet that control colour.
