David Walker Smith, Jr.

Since five of David Walker and Katherine (Hardy) Smith's children married BASTINs, they have more descendants named BASTIN than many of the Bastin ancestors who were named Bastin! These are two pictures taken of David Walker Smith. The first one, on the left, shows David Walker Smith and his wife, Katherine (Hardy) Smith, seated, with their son, Lewis 'Luby' Smith, standing behind them. The second, presumably taken when David Walker Smith was much younger, has been identified as him with a much more neatly trimmed beard.

However, after carefully studying the photos, I am wondering if this 'younger' photo is really of William M. Bastin. Does anyone know for sure? James Cordis Bastin identified the photo as being of his maternal grandfather, D.W. Smith, but I now wonder if it were really his paternal grandfather. William M. Bastin died when 'Cordie' was young, and I am wondering if the identity of the grandfather in the photo was confused. Does anyone know for sure? D.W. Smith's ears protruded slightly in the other known photo of him. Yet, the goatee-style (really Van Dyke) beard, and non-protruding ears of the 'young D.W. Smith' match with the one known photo of William M. Bastin. Please email if you know, or if you have other photos of either William or D.W.! Thanks!-- Gary

As any genealogist knows, tracing a "Smith" ancestor is difficult at best. If anyone has any information on "DW's" ancestors, I would very much like to hear from you!
