The story of the fish goes like this. The Greek word for fish is
ichthus, five letters which I cannot reproduce in this letter. The
first, I is the first letter of Iesous, Jesus. The second, ch, stands
for Christos, the X in Xmas. The third is Th, for Theos, God. The fourth
is u, for Uios, Son. The last is S for Soter, Savior. Thus you have the
abbreviations for Jesus Christ God's Son, Savior. Tradition says that a
disciple in those early days often found it difficult to find a lodging
place when away from home. Many began to draw in the dust, or mark on a
building or post, a fish with its head pointing toward the house or inn
of a disciple where a brother could find safe or undisturbed lodging
over night.
Thus, down through the centuries a fish identifies a disciple of
Jesus Christ, God's Son Savior, ichthus. Perhaps the world has not yet
learned this secret code, so I do not find it in my dictionary. Our
faith, of course, does not stand on such flimsy proof.
