She married Mr. Alex Mitchell, 22 Oct 1895 in Columbus, Georgia.
Alex Mitchell emigrated from Sparta, Greece. This store opened before the turn of the century and was located on Lower Broad Street, later named Broadway. He named this shop after himself, Alex Mitchell's. It had wood planked floors, large folding doors that opened onto the sidewalk and two ceiling fans that stirred the summer air and the sweet smell of candy and peanuts. Later, in the store the Mitchell's cooked their own creamy fudge in copper kettles in a kitchen out back. They also sold fresh fruits - papayas from Florida, avocados, pineapples, and the best honeydew melons in town - all done up in pretty gift baskets and callophane. "He had anything in the world you wanted that was exotic that nobody else had." Says, C. Dexter Jordan of Columbus, who recalls many childhood visits to the candy shop. Alex, invented a candy called, "Dixie Chip". It was a delicious pink candy with little raw peanuts. The candy was made on very large, marble top tables, which were at least 4" thick. These tables were later stored in the basement of his son, Evans' home.
Dixie Chip was a favorite of the whole family, as well as many people in the towns of Columbus and Phenix City, Alabama. "Mr. Mitchell's Place was down Broad Street a bit, where McLendon's is now, and it was a marvelous store. It had row upon row of big shiny candy jars ranged in the shelves, with everything from imported German Candies with little flowers in them to glistening licorice "snakes" as we called them. But the most wonderful contraption was the peanut roaster, which incidently, Evans A. Mitchell still has on display. It was a little glass case, with heat coming from someplace below, and Mr. Mitchell would sit and patiently turn the wheel that kept the peanuts rolling over and over, and toasting to such a flavor as no peanut has had since! You could get a mighty big sack of those for a nickle."
After Mr. Mirchell's death, his son Evans, took over the candy store. In later days, Evans could not get the tiny peanuts used in the Dixie Chip. It was so popular, people would come asking for it. Evans would have to order the nuts from Texas by the bushel. Even after his retirement and after the store closed, in 1968, people would still come to Evans and ask him to make his father's wonderful candy. Which he would do until his health no longer allowed it. After Evans, death in 1995, The tables were sold along with his house. They were so large and it had been so hard to get them into the basement, the decision was made to let them go with the house.
