Immortal Myth

Immortal Myth

Immortals are surrounded with legends and myths. Their lives are intertwined with prophecy and lore. Many immortals themselves have become legends. Duncan knew of Conner long before he ever met him. Cassandra was known as the witch of Donan Woods. Duncan himself became a legend in Glenfinan. The MacLeod who rose from the dead to avenge his fathers death and kills Kanwolf the Viking and stop the slaughter. Here are some of the Myths that fill our fantasies to blur the line between reality and dreams.
(This includes Methos, Methuselah's Gift, Immortal Origin, Holy Ground, and the Holy Spring)

Of course, one of the greatest myths was that of Methos the oldest living immortal

The Methuselah Stone

We're first introduced to the crystals in the episode Legacy. Here Luther is trying to gain all of the pieces so that he will become invincible. The crystal belonged to Rabecca, and she gave pieces of it to all of her students. Luther dies, and the crystals are not found (by Duncan and Amanda).

They resurface again in Methuselah's Gift:

"The Methuselah stone. You almost had it Luther. The thought of you becoming all-powerful scares the hell out of me even now. But is it really possible that the possession of all of the pieces could make an ordinary human immortal? There's only one way to find out."

Nathan Stern (Luther's Watcher): "Some say that the crystal will protect its wearer from death."
Methos: "Just myth and superstition."
Nathan: "But possible all the same."

"Do you know anything about the Methuselah stone MacLeod? There have been stories about its power since before I was born. Whoever has it lives forever."

"Do you know anything of its history? It belonged to Methuselah, he lived to be over 900 years old. Before Methuselah died he gave it to his Grandson, Noah. Now Noah survived the great flood."

When all of the pieces fit together, the crystal changed form and glittered forth hope into Methos's eyes, for he was trying to save Alexa. Geiger was shot, and all but one piece fell to the river below. Some speculate as to why Geiger wasn't saved, and I have only one thought from the words of Rabecca: "It would have been worth nothing to you if you had stolen it."

Origin and Unity

Where do immortals come from, and did they ever live joined? These questions are explored in the first season, showing the longing of immortals to know more of their own world.

"Do you think we ever lived like this? Like a tribe? Together with a common language. A reason and a name for each living thing? Our People once belonged somewhere. A time. A place. However briefly."
(Conner MacLeod)

Fairy Tale(told by Duncan to Belinda)
DM: Once there was this place where the fairy people lived. It was a beautiful city in those days, surrounded by white walls and tall stone towers . . .

Belinda: What were they like?

DM: Well, they were like regular people, except they lived for a very long time and they never grow old.

Belinda: Like Peter Pan?

DM: Yeah, sort of. Well, the fairies were handsome, and wise, and very, very clever. The problem was as time went on there were more and more people, and soon the fairy people had to leave their home in the fairy city. They moved into the mountains, and into the old forests and into the caves and in the cliffs, but the other people always found these places so the fairy people had to move on.

Belinda: That's sad. Where do they life now?

DM: Oh Belinda, they're all around us! And you know what their job is? It's to protect children and sometimes tell them stories.

Belinda: Have you ever met one?

DM: Oh, lots.

Holy Ground

We all know the rules that immortals live by, don't fight on Holy Ground, and only fight one on one. Well, what happens if and immortal kills on Holy Ground? The only clue is found in a watcher myth:

Joe: "You know, in all our records there's only one account of an immortal killing on Holy Ground. Well, it's never been confirmed, it's more of a legend. 'bout two guys going at it in a temple."

DM: "Yeah?"

Joe: "It was Pompeii, 79AD."

DM: "The volcano!"

Holy Spring

Dark Quickenings. An immortal gaining to much darkness, to much evil, and being overcome. For Coltec and then Duncan this was no longer a legend, but a reality. Duncan's saving grace was that part of him fought the Evil Duncan, and that he had a friend with a special knowledge:

Methos: "There's a holy spring here, it's been lost since the 7th century. Nobody seems to know about it. There are indeed those who say it's magic."

The milky water glowed blue-green when it touched with immortal steel. And in this holy place two immortals fought. The cleansing of Duncan's soul came about through the mystical introspection found in the springs holy waters.
