Sea Story or Comment : We were on Formosa Patrol and I came down with appendix problems. the captain ordered us into KeeLung and sent me by taxi cab all the way to Taipei to the hospital and Needless to say the same night they operated on me there was an earthquake on the other side of the island which shook the hospital pretty bad they evacuated all the patients out on to the lawn . They left me there for a month. Finally a naval attaché officer came in and asked If my name was Thomas. I told him I was waiting for someone to come and pay the bill. He told me they thought I might have passed away on the trip to the Nationalist hospital. They put me on a USAF transport and flew me to Tokyo then train all the way down to Sasebo then on a tanker and transferred me back on to the Hopewell off the coast of North Korea near Wonson. Everyone was surprised and glad to see me back. I was real happy to get back. |

Sea Story or Comment : My two years on this ship were a couple of the best of my entire life. The WEB sight, has been pretty good to me by the way. I am now on e-mail with three other guys that I was on the ship with from 61 - 63 that I found on the WEB, or one of them found me. It would be 4 guys if the damned VA hadn't bumped off Jim Stomboli. That one really got to me for awhile. Anyway, I hoped all my Navy friends would enjoy that thing on the Navy. Most of those things were very true. If anyone reading this has any knowledge of where Don Johnson RD2 1962 -1964 is please let me know. |

Sea Story or Comment : My name is Luke Droz and I am looking for any information about my father's time on the U.S.S. HOPEWELL. Any stories or memories would be greatly appreciated. He often talked fondly of his time in the Navy but as time passes these stories become less familiar to me. Some may know him as Casey Dugan. I know that he had a friend, Don Mc. that stayed in touch. Don even visited once with his wife and I know that my father really enjoyed that. If Don gets this message I would like to say "Hi" and I hope that he and his family are doing well. [Dad] passed away a few years back and I miss him a lot. He was a great father and a wonderful man that I really respect. I hope to hear from someone and I hope all are doing well! |

Sea Story or Comment: Dear Mr. Parrish: My father, Chief Edward Fielding was aboard the YMS-48 mine sweeper and was among the survivors who got picked up that day by the Hopewell. I doubt that he got the chance to thank your uncle for his bravery and dedication that day, but I will thank you now in my late father's name to your late uncle. The events of that day basically ended the war for my dad. He retired from the Navy in 1948 and joined the merchant marines where he served an additional 25 years. He didn't talk about the war much, but I know he served aboard the USS Rigel(AR-11) in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked, as well as the YMS-48. Thank all of your family from all of my family for the ultimate sacrifice that William M Parrish made on Feb. 14, 1945.Very truly yours, Ed Fielding |

Sea Story or Comment: The night I stepped over from our bridge to the most decorated ship on the west coast, USS Frank Knox and borrowed a safety plug so we could fire our hedge hogs the next day during sea trials. We traded turkeys and canned food in dry dock to get the wiring. Even though I was a Sonarman, I went down below into the boiler room and took a number of black & white pictures of people I did not really know. The others are color for the most part. They show damage from the carrier incident. Shore bombardment and just daily life of the top side sailors. Regards, Gary Mann STG2 |

Sea Story : The USS Hopewell was put into commission in 1943, and I was born in 1943. I was 17 years old when I went aboard ship. Since I have left the Navy, I transferred to Treasure Island from the Hopewell in March of 64 for separation. Back in the late 60's I had visited Larry Busch over in Nebraska, I think it was around Lincoln. He was married and had a couple of children, and was farming. Then he came and visited me, and that was in early 70's.I also ran into Dave Cameron in Ottumwa, Iowa a couple of years ago, but haven’t seen him since. Do you know the whereabouts of Ron Talbott, Ron Copeland, G.L. Harris, Donald Petree, Carl Levy, or Terry Pool? I got married in 1966, and the 13th. of Feb. was our 37th wedding anniversary! Our oldest son lives 14mi. from us, and we have 3grandsons;14, 13, 12. We had a younger son, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1991. He was just four days shy of 21. I have had diabetes for thirty years, and have taken shots from day one. In 1996, I had a brain tumor, and went to Rochester Minnesota, and was in surgery for 10 hrs. having it removed. As a result of that, I am deaf in my left ear, and they had to take my left bal. nerve, but my right bal. nerve compensated for it. Then in Dec. of 2001, I had an angioplasty done , and they planted two stints, and done some ballooning. Then April of 2002 they went in again, and reamed out my stints, shot radiation inside of them, and done more ballooning. I have had my share of health problems, but with faith in my Doctors, and believing in the lord , I have come through it all in pretty good shape. I am on disability now, and on the 17th. of this month, I will be 60. I am glad that I have found people like you, and I am looking very forward to the reunion in 2004. I would be more than happy to hear from my shipmates. Please E-mail me, I would like to hear from anyone who was aboard ship the same time. |

Sea Story or Comment: Gad, 1963 was a long time ago. I was XO from Aug 63 to Sept 65. We were both aboard during the Hunters Point yard period; and you had gone to college before we steamed to the patrol station off Vietnam in Aug 64. I well remember the ship's party in San Francisco. Glad you guys had a good time. You were probably unaware that I started as a dive bomber pilot. I flew 49 strikes flying from the USS Princeton (CV-37) during the first year of the Korean War. In 1952 I flew a patrol bomber from Manila Bay. My vision had not improved and I was grounded, completing my career as a surface line officer. The Hopewell badly needed an overhaul when I reported aboard. She took part in a demonstration off San Diego in the Fall, 1963. It was put on for the incoming SecNav. He was aboard the carrier we plane-guarded while he observed flight ops. We took position off the starboard beam of the carrier for him to observe us fire a full hedgehog pattern. Then Hopewell went alongside and high lined SecNav aboard. ( You can imagine my worry about dropping Sec Nav into the Pacific.) I took him on a tour of the ship. That was intended to show him that the WW II navy ships had been worn out fighting two wars and the cold war. Also to show that twenty-five year old designs simply could no longer be economically upgraded. Hopewell was the horrible example that day [You guys had done such a great job]. The Fletcher class destroyer was a wonder when it was designed in 1939. Its 36 knot speed and five, five inch guns made it the most powerful destroyer in the world. Hundreds were built during the war. The fast carrier task forces that reinvented naval warfare could not have been formed without Fletcher's as ASW screen and AA umbrella. I served in six ships. All had been built during WW II, and all have long since been decommissioned and scrapped, like me. My second career was as a community college teacher in Merced, California. My subjects were physical geography and world regional geography, a discipline I had studied at Stanford. I retired from teaching in 1988, and we built a home in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Sonora, CA, near an airport. I resumed civilian flying in 1970, the year I retired. I made an experimental homebuilt airplane in the early 80's, flew it for ten years and sold it in 1994. I started building two Questair Venture experimental kit airplanes in 1990. I started the Venture Association in 1999. I'll use the custom signature to give you the website for that. If you have absolutely nothing else to do, check it out. Sea Story or Comment : I came aboard sip as a white hat and a mo. later put on the chiefs hat. I got my sea legs on the Hopewell, I had a good crew that put in a lot of hours when others were kicking back so that we could answer that first bell. One thing that always surprised me |

Sea Story or Comment: I served on the Hopewell from about July '60 until January 1961. I was discharged from the Navy, February 1961. The CO of the ship was "Blinky" Silvani. I don't recall his actual name. I do remember his attempting to tie up at a pier at the 32 St. Des Base (sometime during the above time frame) and crashing the port side into the pier. The side of the ship was caved in for 8 frames and the deck in the Goat Locker was buckled. |

Sea Story or Comment: We had the best skipper in the Navy! His name was Cdr. W. P. Tyler. To my mind and that of many others he was a person who cared for his sailors. We managed to have great liberty in all Ports of call and we worked hard as a team of some 340 to make the Hopewell seaworthy and ready as a fighter. I was fortunate to be the leading ET during my tenure. It was probably the most rewarding time of my life. The Hopewell crossed the Equator at 00 degrees latitude and 165 degrees 55 minutes W. Longitude on 17 February, 1957. I was a pollywog at the time and the experience of becoming a "Shellback" will forever be etched in my mind. We made many ports in WestPac, New Zealand, the Admiralty Is. etc. We once steamed for 58 days without any provisioning. I Hope this helps and I hope that some of my old mates can offer their 2 cents worth as well. I do my best to make the upcoming reunion. |

Sea Story or Comment: operated with Hopewell in '53-57had a couple of acquaintances from that era. in 1956, l had a good friend on the Hopewell, an MM named Newton Herbert Harris from San Angelo Texas and have been trying to locate him for old times sake; in fact, l was on the cruiser Helena CA75,(l believe) and we were operating together somewhere in Westpac and the Hopewell was about halfway to the horizon at about 0630 when l watched a seaplane fly right into the after stack and explode. Harris told me later that a chief and a couple of engineers were killed on the Hopewell, and the crew of the seaplane was also killed. I was an MM also and the two of us went to MM school together in Great Lakes. l was on a number of "cans" after the cruisers. also a DE (419) l was on a couple of 2100's and several 2250'sthe 2250's were much better, mainly because of the inboard passageway. |

Sea Story or Comment: I was a career navy officer because I wanted to be one ever since I was about 8 years old. I enlisted in the Houston Naval Reserve Unit when I was 17, then finished high school and a year at Rice University in Houston. After that I went to the Naval Academy, and graduated in June '42. When I reported to Hopewell's pre-commissioning detail I was assigned as the ship's communication officer. It was WWII time, and some of the radio equipment necessary for sea duty was not easily found, but Hopewell's ingenious radio gang overcame. In the Central and Southwest Pacific I spent many hours coding and decoding messages, and standing officer of the deck watches. Perhaps some will remember getting the ship ready for sea in San Pedro, and will further remember the important role she played against the Japanese at Roi and Namur Islands in the Kwajalein Atoll. She was a good ship during a very stressful time. I hope others' memories are as fond as mine. Following my wartime destroyer duties I went into cruiser seaplane aviation, and then aircraft carrier attack aviation. In addition, I spent much time in foreign intelligence in the Pentagon and elsewhere. I retired from the Navy in '72 as a captain. My wife died 4 years ago so I left the East (San Francisco) Bay, and moved to a beautiful new retirement community in Davis in '00. I wish you well as you continue with your self-assigned Hopewell project. From all I can tell you are doing a great job! Ed Kerr |

Sea Story or Comment: We were at morning quarters in port San Diego harbor. Our first class PO a guy named Walker was standing out in front of one of the five inch guns on the fantail facing two rows of neatly dressed sailors waiting for the Chief to come and inspect us and give us any information about what was to be done that day, Etc. While we were standing there a sea gull singled Walker out and crapped right smack dab on his white hat. Here were two rows of sailors laughing so hard we like to fell over the side and I bet they heard us on the bow. Walker was so mad he was hollering at that sea gull and accusing him of being prejudice and a lot of other things because he picked him out instead of someone in the larger group. What walker said is unprintable but I still get a kick out of it to this day. |

Sea Story or Comment : When I came aboard ship in 1962, I was still a white hat. I had a month to go before I became Chief, so I shadowed the Chief that I was to relieve learning what a Chief does. Since leaving destroyers as a new second class six years earlier, I found it very hard playing catch up due to lack of experience. But I wasn't the only greenhorn. One night I got several calls reporting that the forward fire room was smoking white. I went to the main deck and looked at the stack and saw nothing. I called the fire room, "Nothing going on I said." Again a call, "#1 stack smoking white." I went to the bridge and asked the officer of the deck what he was looking at and he showed me his "white smoke". I explained that the hot gases passing close to the white mast light made it look that way, but if he'd look closer he could see stars through the "smoke". No more calls! I don't remember about anyone dying in 1962 but I will look around for any memorabilia I may have and pass it along to you. I've really enjoyed this site and commend you for your work on it. If I can be of help, please let me know. D. W. Taylor, BTC retired |

Sea Story or Comment: Dear Destroyer Friends, At long last, I’ve gotten my destroyer web sites to the point where I begin to like them—more than 1200 web pages linked via a “Destroyer Home Page” at http://www.domeisland.com/destroyers/index.html, a “Fletcher Class Home Page” (with all the color photos I can find) at http://www.domeisland.com/fletcherclass/index.html and a “DesRon 21 Home Page” at http://www.domeisland.com/desron21/index.html. New features you may not have seen before include “history in quotes” at http://www.domeisland.com/desron21/quotes.html and photos of more than half the 1500-tonners at http://www.domeisland.com/goldplater/index.html. Good writing from Capt. Crenshaw (speaker at the recent DesRon 21 and Friends Reunion) may be found at http://www.domeisland.com/goldplater/first_person.html, and if you’re curious about my own destroyer pedigree, you may even find my own grandfather at http://www.domeisland.com/flushdeck/usscraven.html.I belabor this because this is the format in which all this material will appear for the foreseeable future. It is also amenable to capture on CD-ROM, which might make a good item for your ship’s store or a small revenue-generator at your reunions (the Nicholas reunion group charges $30, or whatever a shipmate can pay, as they don’t want to deny anyone for whom $30 would be too steep). If something like that would interest you, please let me know. Development will continue and, as always, your comments, amendments and corrections are most welcome—these web pages are really YOUR web pages in more ways than you may individually know, Dave McComb |

Sea Story: I was on the West Virginia when she was sunk at Pearl Harbor then went on a heavy cruiser, the Salt Lake City then transferred back to the West Virginia to bring her back to Bremerton to be rebuilt. I was immediately sent to San Pedro to catch the Hopewell but she had already had sea trials and was in San Diego. I boarded her in San Diego and never returned to the States until we were hit off of Corrigidor and returned to Mare Island in Vallejo where we were quickly repaired and sent back out to the Pacific. I wonder if any of my old shipmates on the Hopewell during WW2 remember when we were escorting some LST's to some darn island and the Captain wanted to take a closer look at a school of whales. So we wandered off to take a look. I was in the forward engine room and suddenly the whole damn ship shook. I climbed the ladder to see what had happened and here was this huge whale leaping out of the water almost cut into. We had hit him with our screw and bent it and could do no more than 9 knots anymore without shaking the ship apart. Gave us a nice warm feeling to have a ship that could only do 9 knots. And one of the saddest memories I have is when we were in one of the worst typhoons to hit the Pacific and a buddy of mine named Olson who was a Gunners Mate who tried to make it to his watch station in the forward 5" gun turret and was swept overboard. It was at night and he wasn't missed for a while and it was impossible to look for him. I hope and pray he is resting happy in Heaven. Or the time we were tied up to an ammunition barge on some island taking on ammunition and had an air raid. We immediately got underway and I was in the forward engine room. My throttle man named Luster had the throttle wide open and we were hardly moving. I climbed the ladder and was not pleased to see that we were still tied to the ammunition barge and were towing it along with us. We finally cut loose thank God. I don't remember many off my old shipmate’s names now, but I do remember Rebel Parrish. Our first skipper was Commander Shute and we called him don't shoot because he wanted to see their slant eyes before opening fire. Then we had Commander..[Rodimon] who was a big improvement until Corrigidor where I think he goofed badly. Our chief engineering officer was a mustang officer named Bill Carr and he was a good one. Still learning to use the computer and being 80 years old I have a hard time learning anything. I can remember some of the other crew members but not too many. Hope this helps. PS: I type with my fore fingers Jim Hunter. I have many memories of the years I spent on the Hopewell |
