Sea Story or Comment ? :   We had the best skipper in the Navy! His name was Cdr. W. P. Tyler. To my mind and that of many others he was a person who cared for his sailors. We managed to have great liberty in all Ports of call and we worked hard as a team of some 340 to make the Hopewell seaworthy and ready as a fighter. I was fortunate to be the leading ET during my tenure. It was probably the most rewarding time of my life. The Hopewell crossed the Equator at 00 degrees latitude and 165 degrees 55 minutes W. Longitude on 17 February, 1957. I was a pollywog at the time and the experience of becoming a "Shellback" will forever be etched in my mind. We made many ports in WestPac, New Zealand, the Admiralty Is. etc. We once steamed for 58 days without any provisioning. I Hope this helps and I hope that some of my old mates can offer their 2 cents worth as well. I do my best to make the upcoming reunion.

Sea Story or Comment ? :   operated with Hopewell in '53-57 had a couple of acquaintances from that era. in 1956, l had a good friend on the Hopewell, an MM named Newton Herbert Harris from San Angelo Texas and have been trying to locate him for old times sake; in fact, l was on the cruiser Helena CA75,(l believe) and we were operating together somewhere in Westpac and the Hopewell was about halfway to the horizon at about 0630 when l watched a seaplane fly right into the after stack and explode. Harris told me later that a chief and a couple of engineers were killed on the Hopewell, and the crew of the seaplane was also killed. I was an MM also and the two of us went to MM school together in Great Lakes.

Sea Story or Comment:   I was a career navy officer because I wanted to be one ever since I was about 8 years old. I enlisted in the Houston Naval Reserve Unit when I was 17, then finished high school and a year at Rice University in Houston. After that I went to the Naval Academy, and graduated in June '42. When I reported to Hopewell's precommissioning detail I was assigned as the ship's communication officer. It was WWII time, and some of the radio equipment necessary for sea duty was not easily found, but Hopewell's ingenious radio gang overcame. In the Central and Southwest Pacific I spent many hours coding and decoding messages, and standing officer of the deck watches. Perhaps some will remember getting the ship ready for sea in San Pedro, and will further remember the important role she played against the Japanese at Roi and Namur Islands in the Kwajalein Atoll. She was a good ship during a very stressful time. I hope others' memories are as fond as mine. Following my wartime destroyer duties I went into cruiser seaplane aviation, and then aircraft carrier attack aviation. In addition, I spent much time in foreign intelligence in the Pentagon and elsewhere. I retired from the Navy in '72 as a captain. My wife died 4 years ago so I left the East (San Francisco) Bay, and moved to a beautiful new retirement community in Davis in '00. I wish you well as you continue with your self-assigned Hopewell project. From all I can tell you are doing a great job! Ed Kerr

Sea Story or Comment:   We were at morning quarters in port San Diego harbor. Our first class PO a guy named Walker was standing out in front of one of the five inch guns on the fantail facing two rows of neatly dressed sailors waiting for the Chief to come and inspect us and give us any information about what was to be done that day, Etc. While we were standing there a sea gull singled Walker out and crapped right smack dab on his white hat. Here were two rows of sailors laughing so hard we like to fell over the side and I bet they heard us on the bow. Walker was so mad he was hollering at that sea gull and accusing him of being prejudice and a lot of other things because he picked him out instead of someone in the larger group. What walker said is unprintable but I still get a kick out of it to this day.

Sea Story or Comment :   When I came aboard ship in 1962, I was still a white hat. I had a month to go before I became Chief, so I shadowed the Chief that I was to relieve learning what a Chief does. Since leaving destroyers as a new second class six years earlier, I found it very hard playing catch up due to lack of experience. But I wasn't the only greenhorn. One night I got several calls reporting that the forward fire room was smoking white. I went to the main deck and looked at the stack and saw nothing. I called the fire room, "Nothing going on I said." Again a call, "#1 stack smoking white." I went to the bridge and asked the officer of the deck what he was looking at and he showed me his "white smoke". I explained that the hot gases passing close to the white mast light made it look that way, but if he'd look closer he could see stars through the "smoke". No more calls! I don't remember about anyone dying in 1962 but I will look around for any memorabilia I may have and pass it along to you. I've really enjoyed this site and commend you for your work on it. If I can be of help, please let me know. D. W. Taylor, BTC retired

Sea Story or Comment:   Dear Destroyer Friends, At long last, I’ve gotten my destroyer web sites to the point where I begin to like them—more than 1200 web pages linked via a “Destroyer Home Page” at http://www.domeisland.com/destroyers/index.html, a “Fletcher Class Home Page” (with all the color photos I can find) at http://www.domeisland.com/fletcherclass/index.html and a “DesRon 21 Home Page” at http://www.domeisland.com/desron21/index.html. New features you may not have seen before include “history in quotes” at http://www.domeisland.com/desron21/quotes.html and photos of more than half the 1500-tonners at http://www.domeisland.com/goldplater/index.html. Good writing from Capt. Crenshaw (speaker at the recent DesRon 21 and Friends Reunion) may be found at http://www.domeisland.com/goldplater/first_person.html, and if you’re curious about my own destroyer pedigree, you may even find my own grandfather at http://www.domeisland.com/flushdeck/usscraven.html. I belabor this because this is the format in which all this material will appear for the foreseeable future. It is also amenable to capture on CD-ROM, which might make a good item for your ship’s store or a small revenue-generator at your reunions (the Nicholas reunion group charges $30, or whatever a shipmate can pay, as they don’t want to deny anyone for whom $30 would be too steep). If something like that would interest you, please let me know. Development will continue and, as always, your comments, amendments and corrections are most welcome—these web pages are really YOUR web pages in more ways than you may individually know, Dave McComb

Sea Story: I wonder if any of my old shipmates on the Hopewell during WW2 remember when we were escorting some LST's to some darn island and the Captain wanted to take a closer look at a school of whales. So we wandered off to take a look. I was in the forward engine room and suddenly the whole damn ship shook. I climbed the ladder to see what had happened and here was this huge whale leaping out of the water almost cut into. We had hit him with our screw and bent it and could do no more than 9 knots anymore without shaking the ship apart. Gave us a nice warm feeling to have a ship that could only do 9 knots. And one of the saddest memories I have is when we were in one of the worst typhoons to hit the Pacific and a buddy of mine named Olson who was a Gunners Mate who tried to make it to his watch station in the forward 5" gun turret and was swept overboard. It was at night and he wasn't missed for a while and it was impossible to look for him. I hope and pray he is resting happy in Heaven. Or the time we were tied up to an ammunition barge on some island taking on ammunition and had an air raid. We immediately got underway and I was in the forward engine room. My throttle man named Luster had the throttle wide open and we weren't hardly moving. I climbed the ladder and was not pleased to see that we were still tied to the ammunition barge and were towing it along with us. We finally cut loose thank God. I have many memories of the years I spent on the Hopewell
