August 4, 1998 We have joined countless GeoCities sites in protesting the new 'branding' system, a.k.a. the Watermark. GeoCities is now interfering with the core design of its homesteaders' sites, without our permission -- and they are ignoring numerous pleas by their members to remove the Watermark once and for all. The Watermark, in our opinion, is much too jumpy. It's also unattractive, annoying, oversized (at least ABC and MTV had the good sense to abbreviate themselves in their TV watermarks) -- not to mention it interferes with scrolling and with site design/text/graphics... Need we go on? Even 'bad press' by CNN and other Internet news agencies hasn't shown GeoCities the error of its ways. We thought maybe because we PAID each month for a GeoPlus account, that our opinion might be weighed more heavily than John Q. Homersteader's (after all, we are PAYING GeoCities customers) but we haven't even received so much as a form-letter response to our complaints. Even though we were initially promised that the Watermark wouldn't appear on our GeoPlus vanity URL pages -- it now does -- very much to our dismay. My husband and I had been happy GeoHomesteaders since 1996. Not only were we a SouthBeach Featured Page and a HotSprings Featured Page, we are also earned the GeoCities A-List distinction for BOTH sites. We did not want to leave GeoCities, but really saw no choice as creative web design artists, because GeoCities refused to drown the Watermark once and for all. We gave GeoCities a month to cut its losses, and admit it made a crucial mistake with the Watermark -- they did not. We have moved all of our personal web sites to Infoseek's WBS Free Home Pages. Please update your bookmarks and visit us there, where you will find yourself free of and independent from the annoying Watermark down in the right-hand bottom corner.
