A goy in Oyster Bay Long Island waas in one of those situations that we all hope never to find ourselves in. He had some beloved VW's that must be liquidated pronto. The cars in question were a pair of glass bodied dune buggies. The blue one is quite complete including a softtop. It runs although it suffers from some minor mechanical problems (timing and oil leak). The yellow one is without engine and although it is full of rebuilt parts, like floors tranny and more, it does have some frame damage (slightly bent). These cars and some spare parts had to go right away!!(Like within a week or two). He wanted like $2000 for the whole lot, but any unreasonable offer was supposedly to be considered. I passed the info on the cars to a couple of folks who contacted the owner and had supposedly worked out a deal. Since I never heard back from the seller I only have the word of the very upset attempted buyers. They traveled a great distance with a tow bar and cash in hand got a hotel room and had agreed to meet at a predetermined time, only to be blown off by the owner repetedly. After being told to call back later for the better part of a day, they gave up and went home. I want to appologize publicly for the aweful experience that they went through. It makes me think about posting cars that belong to people I don't know well. If you buy a car over the net....beware, it could happen to you.
UPDATE: All stories have two sides, and without getting into too much detail, the seller has contacted me and informed me that the buggies were indead gone,(sold? scrapped?...who knows?) and that sometimes situations arise that are beyond our control. Benifit of the doubt. But just the same, be prepared for anything when you buy a car over the internet. Anyways, here is what you missed
I got a call the other night from a nice couple of folks who had heard that I buy and sell VW's and fix them up. One of my neighbors had turned me in. They wanted to know if I wanted another one. (Where do they all come from?) To make a long story short, this is the car. It is a '71 super beetle. The pix above are at least a year or so old. The car is a little rougher than they show. Their son is the second owner. Originally green it was repainted metallic blue. The car needs mucho rust repair. The pan halves are good (replaced?) but the heater channels are poor as is the area where all fenders attach to the body. The rear fiberglass fenders are attached with sheet metal screws. Interior is fairly good and it does run. Included is basically everything needed to build another motor. New piston and cylinder set, 2 cases (not sure condition) Rebuilt heads with new valves, all gaskets nuts bolts etc. The car would be a fairly major project for someone to keep them busy this winter. Their son is in college in Boston and they want the garage space. They are asking $500. Contact me if you are interrested and I will get you their number.
UPDATE Havent heard from these folks either, and there has been plenty of snow. I can only assume that they got rid of the car without my help.
