Well I finally made it. I had heard about this great show for a number of years from a number of people, but never seemed to get there. I could list a hundred stupid reasons why I missed this show before, but I will have a hard time coming up with a single reason to miss it next year! In three words..."I was impressed". First I have to thank my wife who encouraged us to go, yes I said us, because anyone that knows me knows my wife just isn't into VW shows, especially when I get there early, stay late and am easily distracted by the cars to virtually forget that she is there. Well, when she heard this was an all makes car show, she suggested we go together. Neat! All I can say is the show was a lot larger than I expected, with a very impressive swap meet to boot. The Shoreline Antique Auto Club and The Connecticut Area Classic Thunderbird Club did an awesome job with this show. Plenty of volunteers seemed to be around to pull things together, music filled the grounds at the Coginchaug Regional High School in Durham CT and the weather was some of the finest car show weather I have ever seen. I could go on and on about all the beautiful cars that were there ( my wife's personal favorite was a turquois '55 t-bird), but this is a VW websight, so lets talk VW's. I counted 24, from vintage restored beetles, to J Martin's handbuilt custom Type II pick-up, plus a couple of sharp dune buggies as well as a scorpion kit car and a splitty type 2 in the swap meet area.
Steve Mierz' '68 daily driver and the 1st place '63 sunroof of Randall Bish of Essex CT.
John Watts' 67 from Plantsville CT and Chuck Pisconski's '50 standard with the terryville bug-a-fair fliers under the hood.
This pretty '67 convertible belongs to Paul & Darry Bora and took 3rd place, while the '69 pick-up is J. Martin's who was traveling with his trusty sidekick Lucimar ( a cute long haired dachshund).
the '73 vert of Linda & Tom Sprick and John Ruhle's '68 vert.
These two were spotted in the swap meet. I have seen the Scorpion advertised in area auto swapper magazines for $1500 firm. It needed work. The baja looked perfect for heading into the woods, but had a long way to go to be a presentable street car.
The preliminary numbers I heard about the overall event were approximately 550 registered show cars and 105 registered vendors. I can definitely report 24 VWs in the show and at least one VW (vendor's vehicle) in the flea market. Participating VWs were mostly from Connecticut, but there were also two Massachusetts cars and two New York cars. The earliest VW was a '50 (Chuck Pisconski's '50 Deluxe) and the oldest was a '79 (Bug City's Convertible). Almost all were Bugs, however there were also three buggies (including one original Manx), plus one Ghia and one Type II. After the judging was over, the award winners turned out to be:
1st place = Randall Bish '63 Sunroof Bug, Essex, CT
2nd place = Jim Coughlin, '57 Buggy, Durham, CT
3rd place = Paul & Darry Bova, Stamford, CT
