Day 3
Day three took the field over the passes to the east of Launceston and down the coast to Hobart. The first stage, the Sideling, was one of the most treacherously slippery mountainous stages I’ve ever driven on bitumen. Our light car felt like it was wearing ballet slippers on ice after an early morning shower fell on roads that had received no rain for a long time. We saw many sad faces standing beside cars off the road including two friends, both in MX5 Mazdas from Brisbane. One would continue and one would not!
The second Targa stage on
day three was Derby. This proved to be
our triumph as we posted 4th fastest time, one second behind Jim
Richards in his Porsche GT3 over 6km.
But these conditions were the same for other light cars and this meant by pressing on we were able to make up more time than we normally would on a dry road. And that is what’s happened. On this day we made up 4 minutes 49 seconds on the leading clubman
competitor.
Derby again!
