Jedi Apprentice #1: The Rising Force - Dave Wolverton

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Story:

Obi-Wan Kenobi is about to turn 13 years old. But if a Jedi Master does not take him on as a Padawan before his birthday, he will be sent away to the Agricultural Corps on Bandomeer to be a farmer, and will never get to become a Jedi Knight. Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who even after watching Obi-Wan fight at the Jedi Temple, refuses to accept Obi-Wan as his Padawan. So, Obi-Wan is sent to Bandomeer, which just happens to the same planet that the Senate has sent Qui-Gon to. Is it just a coincidence or is it fate?

Review:

This is the second children's book I have read (the first being Jedi Quest). And I must say, I really enjoyed it! It was only a three-day read for me (though I'm sure it could easily be finished in a day). But as soon as I finished it, I picked up the next one right up!

Well, where to start!?! The characters were all great. It's nice to see them re-use a species once in a while. One was the Togorians (which are from the Han Solo Trilogy; Muuurgh, anyone?) and Whiphids (big, hairy, ugly dudes seen in Jabba's Palace). And then there's always the good ol' Hutts (Ugh!). The book still keeps you on the edge, even though you know that neither Qui-Gon nor Obi-Wan are going to die. It gets quite dramatic towards the end. I could even hear some of John Williams' wonderful score playing in my head! Very well done.

My only complaint would be that it was too short, and a bit rushed at times. But, of course, it's geared towards younger readers, so this is understandable.

This is a really great book for all ages. If you've ever wondered about how Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon joined up, this is for you. It's a really, really great book!
