Cheapie 1/6 Vehicles List

Current as of July 16, 1998

I put together this list of several inexpensive (most under $10) Joe-size vehicles I've seen personally or that have been posted by fellow Sandboxers. These are great for customizing and in some cases OK as is. For the most part, I've limited the list to non-R/C, non-motorized vehicles. LMK if you find any mistakes. It'd be great to get additonal info from anyone else in this category. Note: actual prices in your area may be more or less than those listed. Enjoy!

#7768 First Strike Command Team Set (Jeep & Helicopter) $9.99 at K-Mart
Were in JC Penney Xmas catalog as #655-3150 for $15. Apparently no longer in stock last time I called a couple of weeks ago. Recently found it at K-mart (thanx to Chris Erickson!). Heli is a bit smaller than 1/6. Personally love it tho! Some say the jeep looks kinda cheesy, but looks ok to me (think Lost World dino chaser). Plenty of stickers for detail (these are cheesy!) but both units look complete w/o them!

#1459 All American Pickup $9.99 at PlayCo.
Just got this one! Awesome off-road pickup! Huge knobby wheels and hinged tailgate. Two color choices: Hi-lighter yellow body on black chassis or vice-versa. Cool sparkly hologram stickers on doors say "CRUSHER". Room for 2 CC/VIN in the cab. Plenty of room for gear in the rear. Grill/headlight details are on a sticker. Now my guys will have something to tote their hang gliders on!

#9065 Fashion Doll Ford Explorer $7.99 at K-Mart
Pink. Got this one a few weeks ago for customizing. A bit small for HOF but CC/VIN can scrunch down nicely. Fits 2 guys in front but needs modifying leg room in back seats for 2 more. Room in the rear for gear. Details are molded into the body, no stickers. Very cool if I can figure out how to paint it OD green.

#? Fashion Doll Ford Mustang $6.99 at K-Mart
More pink! Convertible has room for 2 fig's. Back seats are useless even for Barbies (maybe made for the Kelly-type little sisters to ride in). Features are all molded into the plastic, no stickers. Nice possibility for a cool Joe cruiser. Additional--just found out this is probably the KO version of the Barbie vehicle and the rear seats are for the little sister dolls. Funny thing is tho, this vehicle is officially licensed by Ford while the Mattel car is the generic one.

#? Fashion Doll Corvette $6.99 at PlayCo., K-Mart, etc.
Even more pink!! Ugh, too small even for Barbies (1/8 scale?). Got this for my girls a while back. Had to cut off the T-top and rear window to get the dolls to go in. They look too big in it. Recommend pass on this one for Joe customizing.

#85310 Fashion Girl Jeep Grand Cherokee $22.99 at PlayCo.
Comes with fashion doll, mt. bike, rear rack for bike, and roof racks. Pink (what else?). Front/rear details are on stickers. Looks a little too wide, but room for 4 guys in there with room to spare for gear in the rear, good headroom too. Robert DeCastro used this one for his "Grape Ape" project. Great custom job! (Still think there's some paint that'll work other than dyeing in RIT)

412 Sparkle Sport Cruiser $8.99 at PlayCo.
Dune-buggy style jeepster. Very round features. Sparkly pink body with white chassis, tires & roll bar or vice-versa. Hdlt/grill sticker. Probably requires LOTS of customizing to bring up to Joe standards! Good luck if you get this one (I passed). Also available with horse trailer and goofy-looking horse for a bit more $$.

Here's the latest from Rudy on these really COOL military vehicles:

"I've heard from a reliable source that the company that makes Strike Force vehicles and figures in the UK has cut a deal with an American distributor, and the first results will be turning up on the shelves at Target before the end of the year.

No details on which products will be sold through Target, or if other retailers will have a shot at carrying anything. I'm in the process of establishing contact with the Hong Kong office of Sunnysmile, and will post any news as soon as I get it."

#3401 Rumble Chopper $14.99 at TRU $9.99 at KB
Nearest to 1/6 scale bike in this price range. Comes in blue or red with flame decal on over-sized gas tank. Plenty of chrome too. Saddle bags contain a battery compartment to power a single button that gives a cheesy motor noise and makes the bike rumble. A pretty good value for the money.

Barbie Hot Driving Sports Car $8.97 at Wal-Mart $9.99 at KB
Pink (of course!). Looks like a midget Miata. Room for 2 Barbies, maybe only 1 Joe. Your Joe will definitely look like he's driving on a budget!

Sun Wheeler $8.97 at Wal-Mart $9.99 at KB
Purple with pink trim small jeepster. Another small vehicle with only 2 seats. Supposed to be part of the Pearl Beach Barbie theme.

Barbie Cruisin' Car $19.99 July special at PlayCo.
I know I said no motorized, but I had to put this one in because it used to go for $39.99. It has 4 driving patterns, that it follows when you hit a button. Only room for 2. Looks like a Mustang convertible.

Whew! That's all for now.
