ABSCESS - A concentration of pus beneath the skin, sometimes quite deep, usually caused by an infection. An abscess may be caused by the intrusion of an embedded foreign object or a trauma that causes deep bruising.
ARTICULAR - Relating to a joint.
BOWED TENDON - A trauma causing the thickening ( bulging) of the superficial flexor tendon, usually between the knee or hock and the fetlock.
CHRONIC - A persistent or recurring condition.
CORDING - The swelling of a leg due to the circulation being compromised. Soft tissue can atrophy if the offensive binding is not removed quickly. Often when a leg cords up it swells to twice it's normal size.
CORONARY BAND - The rise above the coronet.
CORONET BAND - The area from which the hoof wall grows. It is soft and sensitive and should the coronet be damaged, the hoof will not grow normally from that point until the injury heals.
CURB - Thickening of the tendon or ligament, with the enlargement at the back of the hock. e.g. curbed hock
DMSO - Dimethyl sulfoxide, a naturally occurring chemical that is able to pass through the skin. It contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and analgesic properties.
EDEMA - An accumulation of fluid in the cellular tissue creating swollen conditions.
FETLOCK JOINT - Sometimes referred to as the ankle, joins the pastern and cannon bone.
LAMINITIS - Also called Founder is an inflammation of the hoof usually following a carbohydrate overload or toxicity. This results in circulatory problems of the laminae.
NAVICULAR - A syndrome or condition which is the result of altered blood flow to the navicular bone. A severe and crippling disorder which causes extreme pain and internal swelling and pressure in the hoof.
PASTERN - The leg segment between the fetlock joint and the coronet band.
PHENYLBUTAZONE - (Bute) A drug administered quite frequently for relieving pain and inflammation.
RING BONE- An arthritic like condition which causes an excess build-up of calcified new bone growth in the pastern bones. Chronic conditions lead to the destruction and eventual fusion of the joint.
SPAVIN- Very similar to ringbone in it's cause and effect, but limited to the hock joint.
SPLINT BONES - Slender bones situated on either side of the cannon bone.
STIFLE JOINT - Joint junctioning the tibia and patella. This joint is positioned to flex the horse's rear knee or Hock.
STRINGHALT - A nerve disorder resulting in the horse snatching up the rear leg briefly while walking or trotting.
SYNOVIAL FLUID - Nature's joint lubricating oil
TENDONITIS - Refers to any tendon which has been over
stressed, inflamed and very painful.
(usually a repetitive motion injury)
