Flies
During the summer, your rabbit may be striken by flies. Flies can strike and kill any healthy animal that has loose stools (droppings), open sores, or fur dampened with urine or feces but especially those rabbits who are old, disabled, long haired, or overweight rabbits who cannot properly clean themselves. Within 24 hours, rabbits can enter a terminal state of shock due to maggot infestation. If open sores are present or if the fur is dampened with urine or feces, flies will head toward these warm areas to lay their eggs. Keep your rabbit dry and consider getting him short-even-shaved to prevent this. Also, keep your rabbit clean. See my "bunny bath" section for details.
