RainForest Tips and Hints

Colour Tips and Hints

1) The thing to remember with any page is to make it pleasant to return to. Try to avoid glaring background colours, or painfully clashing colour combinations of text and background. If you come across a site that has a background colour that you like (but is not an image), use your browser to view the source, and jot down the code in the quotes of the bgcolor command on that page.

2) If you set the colour of your links too close to the colour of your background, as with your text, it you could end up making them practically impossible to see, making visiting the page unpleasant and awkward.

3) Why have a background colour when you are going to use an image on the background? - Well you don't need both, but if the image gets corrupted, doesn't upload properly, someone surfs through with a browser that is not set to show images, or whatever calamity hits town, you have a colour to fall back on that still shows off your page.

Link Tips and Hints

1) One of the easiest ways to prevent typing errors when linking in an address, is to browse to the site, copy the address (URL) from the top of the browser, then paste into your code page.
If you wish to do this with the GeoCities editor, open another window (in the file menu select New Window (msie), Open New Browser ( Netscape)), then use one to browse and copy, while the other, still in the File Manager receives all the pastes.

2) Alternatively, you could use your bookmarks, viewing the properties, and copying the URL (address) from there.

3) If you are linking to another page at geocities, you do not need the all of the URL. Instead of using, for example http://www.oocities.org/RainForest/9900/index.html , you can use /RainForest/9900/index.html

Image Use Tips and Hints

1) If you get this icon instead of your image, first check to ensure you have uploaded it (the image is in your GeoCities directory).
If so then compare the image filename in your directory with the one in your html code (They HAVE to be identical). If there are no errors there, then try to upload the image again. Sometimes the upload facility doesn't do as it should.

2) Your choice of background image is crucial. If the image you choose is bright and psychedelic, you will not see enough of the text to understand the page - so no return visits.

3) When you are using a background image, it pays to use a graphic (usually a GIF or JPG) that is small in memory size (quicker loading), and looks tidy when tiled.

4) If the image you choose for your background has a thick border or sidebar with a colour that will hide your text, use a 2 column table, with the narrow column being a little wider than the sidebar. You then place your main page content into the large table cell, and your text will be kept clear of sidebar. You can then use the sidebar to place your page, even site content links.
