LIFE HISTORY OF Suastus gremius gremius

The adult female Suastus gremius gremius lays her eggs singly on the leaves of the host plant (in this case, Cocos nucifera - Coconut Palm).  The butterfly flies rapidly in the usual Skipper fashion and then stops on a leaf.  It then moves backwards towards the rib of the leaf and lays a single egg.  The egg is reddish in colour when fresh, turning a lightish grey after a day.

Another view of the egg.  It appears to be dome-shaped with pinkish ribs radiating out from the top where there is a red circle.  The egg is firmly attached to the host plant leaf. Egg of Suastus gremius gremius
