LIFE HISTORY OF Suastus gremius gremius

Another view of the pupa.  The folded leaf and pupa are covered with a white powdery silk which makes the pupa and in its protective leaf cell water-resistant.

After about 8 days, the head of the pupa darkens.  When disturbed, the pupa wriggles violently.  The object at the rear end of the slide shown is the discarded head of the caterpillar.
Note the thick white silk which keeps the leaf cell water-resistant.  The leaf is folded and sealed rather tightly.  There does not appear to be any opportunity for any parasites or predators to attack the vulnerable pupa in its cell.
