LIFE HISTORY OF Troides helena cerberus (Common Birdwing)

Egg of the Common Birdwing. The eggs are laid singly by the female and are normally attached to the top or bottom surface of the Aristolochia tagala leaves. After about 4-5 days, the caterpillar hatches.

This is the 1st instar of the caterpillar. Extremely small (about 6 mm long), the caterpillar first eats the eggshell and then bites through the surface of the leaf, creating a hole. It feeds both during the day and at night.
