LIFE HISTORY OF Euploea phaenareta castelnaui (The King Crow)

After about two days, the pupa takes on a pinkish hue, with bright metallic shiny patches. In sunlight, and at certain angles, the reflections off the pupa make it appear to be empty. Photographs do not do justice to the beauty of the pupa when seen in natural light. It reminds me of the golden armour of the robot C3PO of the Star Wars movie.
As the pupa ages, the metallic patches appear to increase in area. There is no movement at all from the "resident" within, even when the pupa is disturbed, unlike the pupae of other species of butterflies. One wonders at the processes that take place to create metallic shiny surfaces out of organic material from caterpillar to pupa.
