Ypthima baldus newboldi (Common
5-Ring)
This
common butterfly can be found in secondary growth and open grassy areas
around the fringes of the nature reserves. Often in flight, even
on overcast days, the Common 5-Ring is believed to feed on Gramineae
(grasses).
The typical yellow-ringed black
ocelli is a distinguishing feature of the various species in the Ypthima
family. The pair of rings at the tornus of the hindwing is counted
as one. The total number of the rings counted thus give this species
its common name.
The butterfly has a rather weak
flight and generally stays close to the ground.
