This
Satyrinae is rather rare in Singapore. Unlike its more common cousin, the
Common Three Ring, this butterfly has a total of six rings or "eyes" on
the underside of the hindwing. The last pair of rings is usually counted
as one.
The species is believed to feed
on grasses and is usually found in shaded areas in the underbrush. An unattractive
butterfly, Ypthima fasciata is usually ignored by most observers. This
individual was photographed resting on a blade of grass at the Night Safari
Zoo (in the daytime, of course!)
