India lies to the north
of the equator between 8º 4` and 37º 6' north latitude
and 68º 7' and 97º 25' east longitude. It is bounded on
the south west by the Arabian Sea and on the South east by the Bay of Bengal.
On the north, north east and north west lie the Himalayan ranges . The
southern tip, Kanyakumari is washed by the Indian Ocean.
India measures 3214
km from north to south and 2933 km from east to west with a total
land area of 3,287,263 sq. km. It has a land frontier of 15,200 km and
a coastline of 7516.5 km. Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay
of Bengal and Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea are parts of India.
India's population, according
to 1997 UN estimates stands at 960.2 million, world's second most
populous country, India is the home of 16% of world's population.The country
, however , accounts for just 2.42% of the total world area.
