Will you drink from the Lord's cup?

Mark 10:35-40

35  And James{1} and John{2} , the sons of Zebedee{3} , come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

36  And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

37  They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand , and the other on thy left hand , in thy glory.

38  But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask{4} : can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with ? {5}

39  And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of{6} ; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:{7}

40  But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared{8} .

From our earlier studies, we know that there are two baptisms. The baptism of water which is the type and the baptism of fire which is the antitype. Read the interpretations at
Glimpses of the Resurrection for more information on this.

There are many that aspire places of authority and honor in the kingdom of God, but many fail to realize that they will never have a place of honor at God's table unless they are willing to drink of the Lord's cup and be baptized with his baptism. The way to greatness in the kingdom of God is to be a servant of all. There are no shortcuts.

The cup represents God's work that Jesus has been sent to do. To drink the contents in the cup is to complete the Father's work. Notice the drinking of the cup comes first, then the baptism. To drink from the cup for Jesus was to die on Calvary, then to be resurrected (the baptism of fire). Jesus could not be baptized (by fire) until He drank from the cup first. Are you willing to drink from the Lord's cup? Each of us has a cup: (a special work God has called us to do.) God is looking for a people that will drink his cup and be baptized with his baptism (have a glorious Resurrection at the 2nd Coming of Christ.)

God is looking for mighty men of valour just as David did in his kingdom. In 1 Chronicles 11 we see the type of this story, three of David's mighty men fight through enemey lines to get him a cup of water from the well in Bethlehem. David does not drink it but rather pours it on the ground. His thirst was not quenched and God's purposes not completed. This is the type. David is a type of Christ. The city of Zion is a type of the New Jerusalem (heaven). David's mighty men are a type of James and John and those modern day mighty men of valour who will stand up and fight a spiritual warfare for the establishment of God's kingdom, risking all to please their commander and chief.

Notice that God has prepared the seats of honor on the right and left side of Jesus. This is because God is the only one that can make a fair assessment of both Old and New Testament (Covenant) saints. The three against and two and two against three Jesus spoke of in Luke 12:52 represents this competition between the Old Testament Saints, represented by David's mighty men and the competition to be named amongst the Three, and James and John (the two), representing the New Testament Saints striving for positions of honor in the heavenly kingdom to come.

While it is true that God has left all judgement to the Son, (John 5:22) if you read this verse and chapter in context, it has to do specifically with the 2nd Coming when the Resurrection will occur. God has left judgement of who shall be resurrected to the Son. This authority was delegated to Jesus after Jesus was resurrected by the Father (baptism of fire). But the honorary seats around Jesus throne will be doled out by the Father. Those on the right side represent the Old Testament saints. Those on the left side represent the New Testament saints.

Interpretation:

We know from the same account in Matthew 20 that seats on the right and the left hand of Jesus are prepared by the Father. See Mat 20:23. Jesus is telling us that the Father is handling the seating arrangements on the left and right hands of Jesus. The reason these seats are not Jesus to give is because He can only prepare the seats on the left hand under the New Covenant. Those seats on the right hand are for the Old Testament saints.
