Puffy Pictures

A Raising Spiritual Children Project

"Puffy Pictures" can be large like pillows or small little gifts. The drawing and/or size of the fabric determines the final size. Since its best to use permanent ink markers, I don't recommend this project for small children unless closely supervised--those pens make marks that do not come out. But, the drawings don't wash out either so you can throw them in the washer if they really need to be cleaned.

* SUPPLIES: permanent markers ("Sharpie" brand works best), solid light-colored fabric, contrasting printed or solid fabric (for the back), old newspaper, fabric scissors, trimmings (like ribbon, buttons, etc.) washable fabric glue, stuffing material (polyfil is best, but you can use recycled materials by cutting old hosiery into small pieces.) needle and thread (for hand work) and/or sewing machine.

* Cover your work surface with newspaper as the ink will be bleeding through the fabric. Then, with a permanent marker draw your picture right onto the light colored fabric. It's best to draw something that has a definite outline like a dog or a telephone rather than a landscape (unless you draw a frame around it to make the outline clearer.)

* Turn your drawing over and make sure you can see the outline of your drawing as this will be your sewing guide. If the ink has not bled through enough to see an outline, use your television screen like a lightbox and place your drawing face down against the screen. With a pencil trace the outline on the back of the fabric.

* Place your finished drawing right sides together with your contrasting print or solid fabric. Making sure to leave about 4-to-5 inches of the outline open for turning, pin the pieces of fabric together and sew along the outline two times (for strength). Trim the fabric 1/2" away from the sewing line and clip any curves.

* Turn the drawing inside out and sew on any trims like buttons and ribbon. Stuff fully but not so much that you stretch your seams too tightly. Close with a blind or whip-stitch the opening you left for turning. Glue on any other desired trims with washable fabric glue.
