RECOMMENDED BY MARK HOLMES "I thought I would share the title of a good book which I thought many of you might find relevant to your medical situations, although the book is about a different medical condition than what we share. But the lessons are much the same. As you know, it's always an interesting experience discussing treatments with doctors, finding the right doctor, not letting them intimidate you, convincing them that you're not just a hypochondriac, etc. Well, "Making Miracles Happen" by Gregory White Smith and Steven Naifeh is an absolutely fascinating book - one of the best I've read in the last 10 years, made even more so perhaps by the present condition (RA) that I now find myself in. If you want to know how to deal with your octor, learn how to find other options, etc., then you owe it to yourself to read this book." |

RECOMMENDED BY AL The authors main message is the use of Panotothenic Acid (PA) to treat arthritis. PA is found in most multivitamins as B5. PA is a water soluble vitamin. Water soluble vitamins are flushed out of the body and are not stored as are oil soluble vitamins. The authors contention is that RA's either are not getting enough PA from their diet and/or their bodies excrete it way too fast. |

LESLIE'S RECOMMENDATION "This book really did help me out a lot. It explains the role of candida on the various body systems and how candida affects the immune system. Since being on the diet recommended in the book, I have noticed that I no longer have problems with sinus headaches and drainage ( I used to have to constantly clear my throat),PMS is down to a minimal, and my joint pain has decreased. My respiratory system seems to be in much better shape. I no longer am experiencing memory lapses and dizziness when under stress. I lost a lot of weight on the diet and didn't have to count fat or calories! When I went off the diet for about a month, my joint pain began to return." |

RECOMMENDED BY SARAH This was originally published in 1939 by the Author, Jethro Kloss, who was a herbalist. It has an easy-to-use, alphabetical format listing herbs, uses, ailments, causes, and treatments. Also tells how to prepare the herbs for use and has some recipes. It does have some unfounded claims and some quaint misinformation but it's the most detailed book you can find on the uses of medicinal herbs. There are numerous updated versions also. I have referred to this book often. |

RECOMMENDED BY LINDA REVIEW: Benson pursued the relationships between medicine and belief for years before founding Harvard's Mind/Body Institute in 1988. Here, with Stark's writing help, he reports many scientific studies of this relationship, of the placebo effect, and especially of the "remembered wellness" (i.e., desire for health) effect. His three-legged stool of health and well-being--pharmaceuticals, surgery and other procedures, and self-care--helps keep him focused as he explores the reasons for the occurrence of remembered wellness and the mechanisms by which it acts. Many physicians do not want to admit the effectiveness of remembered wellness because it cannot be seen or quantified, but Benson points out that only 15 percent of medical treatments are based on "reliable medical evidence" and that emotions, feelings, and traditions must be borne in mind. In the last chapters, he looks particularly at the roles that religion, faith, and spiritual experiences play in healing. William Beatty Copyright© 1996, American Library Association.
