The Unanswered Questions of Mormonism

(actually, there are many, but if you're a good mormon, you won't even be curious about them)

  1. Why do LDS scriptures and church authorities keep talking about free agency being the difference between Jesus' plan and Lucifer's plan, yet they discourage objective research of the church's history?

  2. (related to 1.) Another thing said often in the LDS church is that "the glory of God is intelligence". Yet apparently using your intellectual freedom in researching church history from non-LDS sources is considered evil, an excommunicable sin, in fact, especially if you share your new-found knowledge with other mormons.

  3. Why haven't the ruins of any of the civilizations mentioned in the Book Of Mormon been found? (see also this page).

  4. Why did over half of the "General authorities" of the early church (i.e. during Joseph Smith's lifetime) leave the mormon church? Can you really accept the claim of the false prophet that "even the very elect may be deceived"? (Think about it, any charlatan can make this claim, and have this prophecy fulfilled)

  5. If the church really offered mankind salvation, why did church leaders feel it necessary to threaten the church's members if they were suspected of being about to "leave the fold"?

  6. How many false prophecies will you accept from your prophets? Joseph Smith himself suggested that if any of his prophecies are false, that he is not a true prophet.

  7. Why does L.D.S. History state that Joseph Smith saw God and Jesus in his vision, with Jesus being identified by God as his son, yet in the famous "Wentworth Letter" no mention of the "this is my son..." etc. , statement is made, and God and Jesus were described as mere "personages"?

  8. If the Word of Wisdom's prohibition of hot drinks applied to coffee and tea, why were the mormons desperate for coffee and tea in 1859, so much so that they were willing to pay as much as 50 cents a pound according to letters written by visiting traders? (source - "Among the Mormons" - a compilation of letters and newspaper reports, etc, written by early mormons and contemporaries)

  9. If the Twelve are really apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ, why does one of these men make light of abused women by comparing their abuse to a kindergarden stay?

  10. If Gordon B Hinckley and others were prophets of God when they were members of the twelve, how come they were decieved by Mark Hoffman? Where was the inspiration in these dealings?

  11. Why did the priesthood need to be personally restored by Peter, James and John if "John the Revelator" and the "Three Nephites" were still on the earth?

  12. Why was Jesus the "God of the Old Testament" if he needed a physical body to be a God?
