Created in 1992, Spawn is the brainchild of Todd McFarlane, comic genius and all around cool guy. McFarlane was already famous for his work on Spiderman, and the Spawn phenomenon propelled him and Image Comics to almost instant fame. There are three series' of Spawn comics: Spawn, Curse of the Spawn and Spawn the Impaler. I have read all three and based on the art and the storyline, Spawn the impaler is my favorite. This page, however, will cover the characters and story of Spawn. There has also been a movie called Spawn which came out in early 1998 and an animated series on HBO. If you rent the movie I recommend the directors cut, and I highly recommend the HBO animated series...the uncut version. HBO is currently airing the second season of the animated series, it is on Friday nights at 11pm Eastern time I think.

Spawn the Comic Al Simmons was an assassin for the United States Government. The only thing he held sacred in his whole life was his wife Wanda. Jason Wynn was Al Simmon's mentor and boss at the CIA. Al successfully pulled off eight assassinations for the CIA until Jason Wynn decided enough was enough and killed him. Due to the fact that he killed people for a living, Simmons went straight to hell when he died. He ended up in the eighth level of hell, where he made a deal with Malbogia, the leader of that level. Simmons promised to lead Hells Army in a battle against Heaven if he was allowed to see his wife Wanda again. Five years later, Simmons, now a HellSpawn, was returned to earth to carry out his side of the bargain. In the meantime, Spawns best friend Terry Fitzgerald, had married Wanda, and they had a little girl named Cyan.
