You'll Never Kill My Song!

You can come onto the Land
and try your best to scare me,
You can come into my home
and try to make me see,

The errors of my ways
and how it is that you are right,
You can do this without truth
with only using your might,

You can tear me from my family
and tell me that I am wrong,
You can beat and degrade me
But you'll never kill my song!

You are also one of the Creator's
but your distance from Him is sad,
I cannot hate you for your treatment
I cannot scream or even get mad,

For you too are His Creation
however distanced from His Grace,
All I can do is pray that one day soon
He'll lead you back to your rightful place.

The laws of man can never overshadow
the Laws the Creator has set in stone,
No man can overturn His Supreme Rule
when he tries, he is so very alone,

So beat, scare and intimidate me
if this you really want to do,
Because my Spirit Song, my Eternal Soul
will never in this time, belong to you!

There are many great role models in this world and some now in the Spirit world. They come from every race, both male and female. There is no way that any one person or one site could begin to list them all. However, this page is my attempt at showing some of those who I have learned about and who I greatly respect. Some will be ones that some of you have heard about already, some you won't have a clue as to who they are. That is the reason for this site...to introduce you to my role models.
These two women are my Akka's (grandma's). Obviously, the one on the left is my Inupiat grandma, and the one on the right is from my white culture.  These pictures have always amazed me because of the complete contrast. This is how I have felt a good part of my life. There is such a difference in the morals, standards and ways of showing your beliefs between the two cultures...when there should not be. Unfortunatly, I never got to meet my dad's mom. She lived in Illinois and died before I was born. However, I use to get to go up north to my Eskimo grandparents in the summer. I loved this time. Akka and Attata's(grandpa) place always felt so safe.
I can remember the summer my Akka died. She had a heartattack. That was a hard summer.
The top picture is my Akka again-Bertha Kayutuk. This one was when she was 16 years old.
The bottom picture is of Akka and Attata-Michael Kayutuk and Bertha. I am not sure about the exact year. Grandma must have been close to 60 and grandpa close to 70.
I do not ever remember grandma or grandpa raising their voices. They taught through actions and love, not yelling or hitting. Granpa use to go to the "Store" (everything from meager groceries to clothes) in the village and buy canned bacon, candy and "white bread" for me. He use to say that he wanted me to have things that I was use to eating. Up north you did not find the selection of meats like in the cities. Fresh bacon wasn't to be found. He would spend what little money they did have on things for me. I use to tell my mom that I liked the eskimo food better. But grandpa was convinced I really wanted the other.
This is my mom and me. She was someone who was always there. She always had a special treat fixed for when we got home from school. She was always there to listen. She gave love without expecting anything back. She worked on the homestead, hauling water, hauling snow for water in the winter, hauling and cutting wood, shoveling coal for the furnace, working in the fields and gardens, and even emptying the honey bucket. Yes we had no running water, hence used an outhouse and honey bucket at nights. My mom died in 1992 and I miss her dearly. I know she is watching over me and my boys. She was also very devoted to the Creator. She died from a disease called Pulmonary  Fibrosis. This was a very painful and scary disease. Yet, through it all, she never complained. Her main concern was for those of us left behind. She didn't want us to worry or be sorry.
Mom, love ya still.
