Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Congress authorized the construction of a lighthouse at Cape Hatteras in 1794. The lighthouse was completed in 1803. It was 90 feet tall and made of sandstone. Sailors complained that they could not see the light because it was just the right height to be hidden by fog. In 1853 the government increased the height to 150 feet. This was done by adding sixty feet of brick on top of the sandstone. Complaints persisted that the light from Cape Hatteras was inadequate for guiding ships. A new lighthouse was authorized in 1867. The new lighthouse was completed in 1870. It was 208 feet tall, making it the tallest lighthouse in the United States. In 1873 the lighthouse was painted with its distinctive black and white spiral stripes. The old lighthouse was destroyed. Located in Buxton, NC.
