HUMAN RIGHTS

A lot of people tell me that I am opinionated. Sometimes, too opinionated for my own good. However, if I have any strong beliefs in something, I think I have the right to express my opinion, after all, I do have the freedom of speech. Some people don't have this right, and Amnesty International, together with the United Nations are fighting to preserve and maintain Human Rights. Human Rights are fundamental in our society as they set guidelines as to how a person may be treated. An important factor to remember though, is whilst we all have RIGHTS, we also have RESPONSIBILITIES to ensure that we do not infringe the rights of others. So if you want to be treated equally and justly, and not be discriminated against, remember, you must treat others with the same respect.

We may be the most intelligent species, but that does not give us the right to inflict pain onto species of lower intelligence. Many animals are treated unfairly and cruelly. For example, in Beijing, dogs, man's best friends, are snatched off of the streets, clubbed to death and served on the dinner table. Around the world, whales are harpooned. Rabbits, dogs, cats, monkeys - virtually any animal - is put through the cruel testing of beauty products. If I find out the names of these companies, I will place them here.

 RACISM

Although Australia is recognised as a cultural melting pot, where people of all nations form one nation, many people do not get along purely on the basis of race. Contrary to popular belief, racism is alive, yet many people do not acknowledge it. In the past week alone, I have heard of at least two racially motivated fights that schoolmates have been involved in. This is not leading the path for a better tomorrow. If the children of today are having racially motivated fights, then what sort of example are we setting for the children of tomorrow?
