Christmas

Mothers who have babies in the NICU have to acquire great strength.
The whole day consists of beeps and alarms of sorts from monitors, meaning several different things.
The babies get used to it but when we visit we have to look around to see
if the loud whining from the monitor is alarming any of the nurses.
If they don’t run over then we knew it was ok.
Sometimes it’s as simple as the baby had moved and made the alarm go off.
Other times the nurses run over with oxygen. It was a had place to visit till you got used to it.
For a week or so the only problem Myriah had was spitting up her milk.
But then she kept doing it more and more. Soon she was spitting up most of her milk.
They said she had a normal thing some preemies have.
Her stomach was too young for food and they gave her medication for it.
A week or so later she would forget to breath.
But as long as they could jostle her and she would start up again, they weren’t worried.

Then Christmas was upon us. News of her losing twins the beginning of the year,
her husband dying and Myriah’s twin dying spread through maternity ward.
Nurses said a big hello to us and we didn’t know who they were but hey, “How are ya?”
The hospital social worker named Myriah the Secret Santa baby.
Every year a sponsor gets businesses to donate money and goods
to someone who is in special needs for Christmas.
So a few days before Christmas a huge bus pulled up to my house.
Out hopped Santa Claus! He was followed by around 10 people carrying big bags and gifts.
Santa came in my front door, large as life and plopped down in a chair.
He called each small child that believed in Santa and
gave them an unopened gift (including my 5 yr. old daughter who was thrilled!)
Then they gave her 3 bags of wrapped presents for Peaches and her children, a basket of cheese
and sausages, cookies, a gigantic ham, and a certificate for a free living room set
by a well known furniture company. It was the most amazing 10 minutes of the year! T
hen he was gone as fast as he came. Of course that is how Santa works.
That same night we came into the Hospital as usual to see Myriah and
the nurses gave her 5 bags of things for the baby.
A car seat, formula, diapers, a stuffed animal ect. But it didn’t stop there!
On Christmas eve morning while Peaches was holding the baby,
she was interviewed by the evening news. It was aired that night at 5:00 p.m. What a week!

Of course we had a great Christmas morning with friends.
IT was a crowded home but warm and cozy.
Someone was missing so we left that night to visit her.
We had put up a baby’s first Christmas stocking a friend
gave her on her open crib.
And next to it were some snowman socks I found in my car
that no one knows where it came from.
2 days later the Hospital called before we could get there.
Myriah had taken a turn downward.
