The Year of the Lion and the Lamb

The Hero

You know those calls in the middle of the night
that leave you not wanting to answer the phone in the dark again?
I received another one from her on Memorial Day weekend.
“Kaheem is dead!”, She blurted out in a cry.
“WHAT?” I thought I was still dreaming.
Tearfully she told me the story of that day.

Her husband had had kids children from another marriage over for the weekend.
He had wanted to keep all of the kids busy that day and so took everyone to the beach.
As the sun started to go down, they were getting ready to go home but the two 7 yr. olds wanted one last swim.
Peaches and Kaheem told them to go ahead but keep to the shore.
As they were all packed they heard screams.
Looking towards the water, Peaches saw their children’s heads bobbing and going under.
Hands flying wildly, grasping for something to hold onto.
Kaheem quickly took off his shoes and ran in. A few other men followed.
He reached the drowning kids first and reached for the closer one, his daughter.
Pulling her above water, he handed her to the first man that had swum out to help
Then he dove under water for the Peaches daughter. She was caught in an undertow!
Finally he found her arm and pulling her above water, gave her to the second man who had just reached them.
The two swimmers, who had gone out to help, swam to shore with the two now coughing girls.
Not looking back. They didn’t see that they weren’t being followed by Kaheem.
Shortly after he had handed the second girl to the man, he was caught in the undertow also and was unable to get free.

On the shore, Peaches was relieved to see the two girls were alive.
An ambulance was on it’s way since the girls were having a hard time breathing.
Peaches looked to the shore and then to the water to see where her husband was. No sign of him.
She become frantic. Calling him as the ambulance arrived, she received no answer.
Divers were called and hours later his body was found floating close to shore.
Throwing herself upon his lifeless body, Peaches screamed a deep heart aching call.
Her love of her life was gone for ever. He had risked his life to save their children. He had died a hero.
