Who Wrote the Christopher Robin books?
Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) , a professional English writer who lived with his wife Dorothy,
son Christopher Robin "Moon" Milne and assorted servants, alternately on Mallord Street in
Chelsea, and at Cotchford Farm, near Hartfield. Milne wrote prolifically - twelve books of essays
from such periodicals as The Sphere, The Outlook, The Daily News, The Sunday Express, Vanity
Fair, and Punch , as well as more than twenty plays, five novels, autobiographical material and
assorted articles. Of these, only the play Toad of Toad Hall (a dramatization of Kenneth Grahame's
Wind in the Willows ) and the novel Mr. Pim Passes By received much acclaim, and this was
nothing compared to the popular adulation reserved for the Christopher Robin Books. From
Kimberly A. Calvin {calvin.6@postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu} : Dorothy Milne was more commonly
known as Daphne. Also, Daphne is often considered to be the one who originally provided "voices"
and personalities for many of the characters. Daphne also submitted A.A. Milne's first (published)
Christopher Robin work, the poem "Vespers," to a magazine for publication without A.A.'s
knowledge or permission.
What are they called?
Winnie the Pooh
The House at Pooh Corner
When We Were Very Young
Now We Are Six
[The first two are sometimes referred to as The World of Pooh , since they were published under
that name in the late 1950's, along with the last two as The World of Christopher Robin. They were
all published together in 1961 as Pooh's Library .]
Who illustrated them?
Ernest H. Shepard (1879-1976) did pen-and-ink drawings for Winnie the Pooh and The House at
Pooh Corner for their first editions (14 Oct 1926 and 11 Oct 1928, respectively). He also did some
watercolors for The World of Pooh and The World of Christopher Robin in 1957, and colored his
own pen and ink drawings for editions in 1974. He was also the illustrator for Pooh's Birthday Book
(1963), The Pooh Song Book (1961), & The Pooh Story Book (1965), among other Pooh-related
material.
Who published them?
Methuen & Co., Ltd. (aka Methuen Children's Books Ltd.) published at least the original edition
and the 1974 color edition in the UK. At least one US edition (the aforementioned "World of...")
was published by Dutton Children's Books (a division of Penguin). One of the most recent editions
in the UK was published in 1991 by Mammoth (an imprint of Mandarin Paperbacks), along with
Pooh & Piglet Picture Books - separately bound chapters from Winnie the Pooh and The House at
Pooh Corner From: Rodney Elin {elin@rff.org} Actually, the copyrights on Winnie the Pooh, The
House at Pooh Corner and the Shepard illustrations have all run out, with the following exception:
The film (and presumably video) rights for the two books are held by The Walt Disney Company,
through about 2020. Disney not only owns the film rights to the Pooh stories, but they also own all
the rights to the "Disney version" of the Pooh characters.
