Welcome to my Poetry Page... just a few poems that have had meaning for me....
The Man in the Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
and the world makes you king for a day
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what THAT man has to say.
For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Whose judgement upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think you're a straight-shootin chum
And call you a wonderful guy
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
He's the fellow to please, nevermind all the rest
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow...
There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two
days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.
One of these days is Yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults
and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever
beyond
our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday. We cannot
undo
a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said.
Yesterday is gone.
The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with its possible
adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor peformance.
Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.
Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendour or behind a mask of clouds
- but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow
, for
it is as yet unborn.
This leaves only one day - Today - Anyone can fight the battles of
just one day. It is only when you and I add the burdens of those
two
awful eternities - Yesterday and Tomorrow - that we break down.
It is not the experience of Today that drives us mad - it is the remorse
or bitterness for something which happened Yesterday and the dread
of
what Tomorrow might bring.
Let us, therefore, live but one day at a time.
Have you ever watched kids
on a merry-go-round
Or listened to the rain
slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down
Don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last
Do you run through each day on the fly
When you ask "How are you?",
do you hear the reply?
When the day is done,
do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last
Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
'Cause you never had time
to call and say "Hi"?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away...
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.
