Welcome all To the MedicaL Laboratory
     Science (MLS) page!

This page is mainly for those in Biotech who are interested what MLS has to offer or how the seniors or the fresh batch aka MLS 9 are doing there. Basically, it's a page where it's a review perhaps weekly or fortnightly on how each is doing in the various labs i.e. Haematology lab, Clinical Chemistry lab and the Clinical Microbiology lab. Currently, you'll be able to read where each of us are posted to under  UPDATES!
So therefore, this page will be under consistent change and construction to serve you better. Eventually, the updates about the MLS side would be in this page.
There are basically five of us for the MLS 9 batch, they are : Thiam Joo, Bee Sim, Rossman, Angela and Sophia ( the Webmistress of this homepage =P).

Now, Thiam Joo is in the Clinical Chemistry lab, Bee Sim and Sophia are in the Clinical Microbiology lab and Angela and Rossman are in the Haematology lab. All of us will be in the lab for about say, 4 months and then we will be rotated to the other labs. This is to ensure the full exposure and training in the various labs. I think in this way, we will be able to really know how to deal with each procedures in the various labs and to apply certain techniques required for various tests.
Though we are so-called isolated from our other friends and coursemates in Mainstream Biotech, life is not as bad as what many people would think being in MLS would be. The NUH staff there are overall very friendly and helpful and made most of us feel quite at home. Other than the freebies like free lab coats, locker spac, our very own notice board and refreshments ( bout 2 - 3 times a week from the seminars we have), the time we spend in the lab really gives us the valuable experience needed. We deal with real life situations, doing the lab tests on the patients' samples. We put into practice what we have learn, it makes your theory-learning during lectures come alive even more.
True, seems like we do the same things everyday for two weeks before going to other benches in the various labs, but each day is a different learning experience. Don't think of it as free cheap labour ( though it seems to be), but as something of value =).

Okay, if you find this boring, we will go on to something else that happen last week. Well, on Tuesday (12/01/99) it was Rossman's b-dae. ( heh...a bit late to announce that but anyway it's not late for late-wishes) We didn't do anything special but the rest of the four just gave all of our well wishes in a b-dae card to him! I guess we were still trying to settle down properly *GwinZ*.

This is what I have to say for now, till next time, perhaps in a week or so.

Okay, it really has been ages since I've updated this darn page *gWinz* Oh well, I guess it is due to the lack of time or trying to find time for relaxation. I thought it was pretty lame to leave the page so bare and all, so i think it's high time I did somthing to update it, apologies to those who have been coming back to this page to look out for updates.Okay, enuff of excuses from moi. on to the latest news *aHem*

Okay, everyone has now been rotated since June. Both Angela and Rossman are now in Biochemistry section, Thiam Joo aka TJ is in Microbiology , Bee sim and I aka Sophia are in Haematology. In mid-November, we will be then rotated to our last sections. To those who are keen on Medical Lab, not to worry...there weren't any failures in the academic sessional tests. Maybe the 1st test wasn't so well done ( except for Rossman who came in tops), but as the 2nd and 3rd came, everyone did better and better.=) Though every week seemed long and tiring, I guess it has to be worth it with all the exposure to the various lab tests performed in NUH.
We went to Alexandra Hospital for a one week attachment. Apprantly. going there will make you appreciate NUH even more *gWinz* The two guys went for the 1st week in around September which after their week spent in AH, the three girls went there. It is a small lab.
Life is a little monotonous after a while, due to the 8-30am to 5 pm timing, but life is interesting there as in people, work-flow, funny characters, and classmates.Recently, we all had this Treasure Hunt thingy for all third year students for the SCV, I guess the event kind of draw all of us in MLS 9 closer, in a way. =) Oh well, looks like I'm stumped on what to say...that's for all now I guess.
Will Be BacK
