The Rise and Fall of a Friendship

Written on February 18, 1999

My friends said you weren't worth my time,
But it wasn't theirs, it was mine.
I disobeyed, I ignored their warning,
And now for myself I am mourning.

At first you were just another friend,
Even though once in a while we did contend.
What I saw about you no one will ever know,
Because to everyone else, you were just a great foe.

As time passed, your feelings altered,
But alas, mine faltered.
I'm sure we would both agree,
That you had moved too fast for me.

You knew it wasn't you I wanted;
As a result we both now are haunted.
Haunted by what was and could have been,
When we try to settle things, we only cause a din.

Too reluctant to admit defeat,
The end we were sure to meet.
And with our lives we are forced to go on,
Each of us moving ahead like a useless pawn.
