In Memory of the Victims of the Columbine High School Shooting

Written on April 22, 1999

We should remember those who are gone,
But never grieve for too long.
They would want it that way,
For us to eventually normalize the day.

As we go on to live our life,
We'll remember you through calm or strife.
We'll remember those who are no longer with us,
As we go to school, as we board the bus.

You never knew the end would come so soon,
That you would never again see the shimmering moon.
You will never again be free to feel a cuddly animal's soft fur,
And never again spin in circles and see the world blur.

Who could have done such a thing?
To make one's voice cease to sing?
The monster took other lives, and then their own,
Committed a crime no one should face alone.

Things like this should never occur,
Not to me or you, nor him or her.
Only time can tell, through the mist,
When this madness will cease to exist.
