Broken Hope
Repulsive Conception
Althotas:Senseless beating of drums and strumming of guitars for the most part. A mixture of Cannibal Corpse vocals with the insanity of Incantation. Songs start crazy but slow down for the solos which are very well structured. Their acoustic guitar songs are very good. One memorable song would be "Pitbull Grin". You can't even follow the singer with the lyrics. Highly Recommended for the stoned, drunk, and/or fucked up. Or if you like to mosh to fast crazy shit.
The Bowels of Repugnance
Althotas:Their second album in which they totally changed their sound. They got a heavier sound but also lost their sanity with their songs. This albums sounds like Cannibal Corpse with less rhythm. They have also done a couple of acoustic songs which in my opinion is their best because the songs feel as though they are being played from feeling. The insanity begins with such songs as "Remember my members" and "She came out in Chunks". Worth checking out. Tab available:"She Came Out in Chunks" and violin intro on "Repugnance" on guitar
Swamped in Gore
Althotas:Their debut album which I must say is their best in rhythm structure. The production is not as heavy as "Repulsive Conception" but has catchier tunes. I've heard they have a new album cover on "Swamped in Gore". The vocals are brutal yet you can still understand and follow with the lyrics. Highly Recommended.
Cannibal Corpse
The Bleeding
Althotas:This album contains more technique, such as two part harmonies, and vocals have slowed down with a more focus on lyric structure unlike the craziness on "Butchered at Birth". It is the last album Chris Barnes does vocals on. The lyric content is still as sick as it ever was. Music wise Cannibal has still stuck to their roots with their unique guitar rhythm. Overall this album seems to focus more on song structure. Not to worry it is still the same brutal Cannibal from past albums. Tab available:"Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead", and "Pulverized"
Xuthus:Of the three Corpse albums I have heard, this is my favorite. This one is full of catchy riffs and the vox are a little more understandable. They are so clear, that at times, you can catch tidbits such as "..my knife deep inside/her crotch is bleeding". This was their landmark achievement, so if you want a Cannibal album, get "The Bleeding".
Butchered at Birth
Althotas:The best Cannibal album in my opinion. The brutality of the music and the sickness of the lyrics oh how do I love. Deicide's lead singer Glen Benton comes on and does background vocals on "Vomit the Soul". Enough said now go out and buy it, it kicks ass man!!! Tab available:"Gutted", "Vomit the Soul", and "Innards Decay"
Tomb of the Mutilated
Althotas:Cannibal Corpse keeps getting sicker and heavier as they go. This is probably the album in which got them started with their big hit "Hammer Smashed Face" appearing on Jim Carey's movie Ace Ventura:Pet Detective. Vincent Locke has the most imaginative mind to come up with the pictures for Cannibal's albums. If you have not yet seen the uncensored version of "Tomb of the Mutilated" then you must check it out. Fucking great sickening, pounding music from the butchers themselves. As I read in a magazine you should not be afraid of them or the music but the flesh eating zombies they sing about. What I've heard Jim Carey asked for them to be in the movie because he also likes them. What is the world coming to when a comedian likes death metal? Tab Available:"Hammer Smashed Face", "Addicted to Vaginal Skin", and "Necropedophile"
Xuthus:Ughhhh! This album reeks of shit! "Hammer Smashed Face" is a fuckin killer song, bludgeoning all the way through. However, following that one all of the other tracks are boring and monotone. You would think that songs with titles like "Entrails Ripped from a Virgin's Cunt" would kill, but they don't. Don't waste your cash..
Vile
Althotas:First album without Chris Barnes and must I say they are still brutal as ever. They are starting to focus more on strong structure with a lower tuning. One such song is "Orgasm through Torture". It's like having two different albums in one. Ex-Monstrosity lead singer George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher has taken over vocals hmmm.....let's just put it this way Chris will always be the best but George is doing one hell of a good job. Tab available:"Orgasm through Torture"
Xuthus:My only question is why? Why, oh why, Cannibal, do you regress back to "Tomb of the Mutilated" -style dogshit when "The Bleeding" was such a great album?! The guitarists sound as though they want to impress their audience by playing songs with 500 riffs in them. Production sucks compared to their previous album as well. What a disappointment!
Deicide
Legion
Althotas:This is the best album of the beast named Deicide. Glen Benton is truly Lucifer with lyrics that deal with pure hatred and Satan. His voice is one of the best with a background vocal by him, added in to make it sound like a demon. Guitar rhythm is the craziest shit I've ever heard not to mention the hardest to play. The drummer is one of the best to be able to keep up with the guitars and to come up with the heart pounding rhythm. Put it all together and you have the best sadistic album ever. If your into Satanic lyrics and pure hatred than this is the album for you. Tab available:"Dead but Dreaming", "Trifixion", and "Holy Deception"
Xuthus:Pack up your shit. Gather your family and get to a bomb shelter now, for "Legion" is here to crush the human race. This is one of the BEST death metal albums ever created!! The brutality found here is almost unmatched. Glen Benton's hateful growls and terrifying screams warn of impending war, while bass-heavy guitars bash your fuckin skull until you cry for mercy, but continue to crush on. No one can match evil like this.
Amon: Feasting the Beast
Althotas:This is a collection of songs from Deicide back in the day when they were known as Amon. This album is for the true die-hard fans of Deicide. This album is so damn raw up the ass man. Vocals are way the fuck crazy. Songs are brutal with some versions being better than what was on their self-titled album.
Xuthus:"Amon" is for die-hards only, seeing as how there is no new material. Basically, all of the hits from their first album are here, as well as their actual demo (which has a cool intro). I'd pass "Amon" up for something I haven't heard.
Once Upon the Cross
Althotas:Just when you thought Deicide had gotten as heavy as they would ever get they come out with "Once Upon the Cross". This album is as heavy as Suffocation's "Pierced from Within". As time passes by this band tends to get more evil and twisted. New songs include "When Satan Rules His World", "Kill the Christian", and the self title. Tab available: "When Satan rules his world".
Xuthus:Another disappointment by another of death metal's premiere bands. Sure, "Once Upon the Cross" contains some good, heavy death metal. However, in comparison to their previous, the apocalyptic "Legion", this is boring. Gone also are the demonic screams that I loved so much. I guess not even the band that created "Legion" can outdo that album.
Gorguts
Considered Dead
Altholtas:A very heavy death metal band. This is probably their best album with backing vocals on "Bodily Corrupted", "Rottenatomy", and "Hematological Allergy" by Chris Barnes and a guest solo on "Inoculated Life" by James Murphy. Their solos have a cool Egyptian type feeling. Everything is perfect except for one noticable detail... the vocals sound as if they are like Obituary's but being stretched. It's worth buying.
The Erosion of Sanity
Altholtas:This album unlike "Considered Dead" was not produced by Scott Burns. Their sound got better(clearer) but could of sounded even better with Scott Burns. Twice as heavy as their first. The only problem is this is the last I've seen or heard of them. This album was done in 1993. So what have they been up to for the last three or so years? This is truly a waste if they only give us two albums, I'm still thirsting for more. Both albums are highly recommended.
Xuthus:As much as I like technical death metal, this one is TOO technical. I've tried again and again to get into Gorguts, but they never catch on. The vocalist, at the very least, grows irritating after a while, with the way he twists his growls. Naaahh..
Hetsheads
We hail the possessed
Shetait:Swedish death metal with great black metal influences. Some parts sound like atmospheric black metal since keyboards and acoustic guitars are worked into a few songs. The guitars have the typical Swedish death sound a la Dismember. However, Hetsheads is by far more melodic, still brutal but not straight forward in your face metal like some of the speed demons out there.
Hypocrisy
Penetralia
Althotas:A well balanced mixture of Deicide with Morbid Angel but with their own unique and killer sound. More than likely they use 7-string guitars to get that low sound. The rhythms are fast and furious to slow and doom sounding. Although none of the lyrics are available for any of their albums one has to wonder in what language and what he is saying with those song titles. Sounds a bit English but then some parts do not. During this album five members.
Osculum Obscenum
Althotas:Very heavy and raw album. A mixture of totally brutal death metal with a bit of black metal. They did a cover of the Venom song "Black Metal" which is a bad tune. This album is highly recommended for its brutality. During this album four members. Seeing a pattern yet?
Inferior Devoties
Althotas:This EP contains never before released songs called "Symbol of Baphomet" and "Mental Emotions". They have also done a cover of Slayer's "Black Magic" which is very heavy and has a raw sound. It sounds to me as if it has a very low tuning(one and a half step down) which gives it it's sound. The vocalist does the same thing as Tom Araya with the shrieking part. You must here it to believe it. Raw vocals on one part then a high shriek on another damn he's good. Now only three members. For every album they do they loose a member of the band. They just lost one of their brutal singers. They also did two remixes of earlier songs "Inferior Devoties" and "God is a Lie".
The Fourth Dimension
Althotas:This album is completely different from "Penetralia" and "Osculum Obscenum". Every time they lost a member they lost their sound. Now it's just slow with a low tuning with chords as songs. They did add alot more keyboards to their songs but it's not the same heavy Hypocrisy as before. Now the figure has stayed to three members. Maybe in their next album there will be only two?
Abducted
Althotas:A very heavy Black/Death metal album. Vocals sound a bit like Carcass "Heartwork". Also there is some new fascination with UFO's with such songs as "Roswell 47", "Abducted", and the intro "The Gathering". A fine piece of music definetly worth buying. Black metal fans should check it out and if you liked Hypocrisy on such albums such as "Penetralia" and "Osculum Obscenum" and were disappointed like me at "Fourth Dimension" you should definetely check this album out, they speeded things up a bit and have a heavier sound.
Immolation
Here in after
Altholtas:Another version of Incantation with a much clearer production and the use of 7-string guitars which gives them a low sounding note. Very intense slow death metal to fast paced brutality. Killer songs include "I Feel Nothing", "Nailed to Gold", and "Christ's Cage". If you liked Incantation than definitely check these guys out.
Malevolent Creation
Retribution
Althotas:Yet another kick ass speed death metal band. Really fast and heavy rhythms. One great guitarist named Phil Fasciana and one pounding drummer Alex Marquez. One of the best guitarists in the death metal scene being James Murphy makes an appearance on the song "Coronation of our Domain" for a outro solo. To add in the bands comment, "Remember: A friend with weed is a friend indeed! See you on tour Mother Fuckers!!" Tab available:"Coronation of our Domain"
Xuthus:Sound-wise, music-wise, and vocally, I feel that "Retribution" is Malevolent Creation's best release. The thing I like the most about Malevolent is their tendency to write straight-forward, yet brutal and catchy stuff. Brett Hoffman, the vocalist, was among the best in death metal. He was able to sing gutterally, but still maintain a level of clearness. All of the musicians shine here, making "Retribution" a great album.
Stillborn
Althotas:The best album from the band. Vocals are totally live and brutal with the last appearance of Alex Marquez as drummer. A new member joins the group ex-Monstrosity guitarist named Jon Rubin. We know now where the former guitarist(Rob Barrett)went, To be with Cannibal Corpse. Tab available:"Disciples of Abhorrence"
Xuthus:"Stillborn" would have outshined "Retribution" had it been produced in the same manner. The mix is overall more muddy than "Retribution", but this is still an excellent release. Brett's vocals sound ever deeper and more raw, and some of the riffs have that certain Slayer sound to them. "Stillborn" is definitely worth getting, despite it's one minor flaw.
Eternal
Althotas:A complete and total sell out. They lost their drummer so they used a drum machine (that's not, in fact, a drum machine, but their new 20-year-old drummer and he's fucking amazing! -Xuth). They sound like the new Sepultura. Vocals totally change from being a man to becoming a pussy with a Sepultura sound. Worth hearing but not ever buying.
Xuthus:Being that Brett Hoffman was one of my favorite vocalists, it was bad news to learn that he had been booted from the band. The bass player has assumed the duties, and while brutal, is not as good as Hoffman. As Althotas mentioned, the new vocals are kind of Sepultura-like, and their monotonous tone gets a bit irritating after a while. Musically, "Eternal" is quite a departure from Malevolent's previous path. This time, there is more of an emphasis on mid-pace, chunky rhythms. The speed remains still, however, and their new drummer is faster than all Hell. Although my least favorite Malevolent release, "Eternal" is still pretty good.
Joe Black
Shetait:Praised and put down at the same time. The first three tracks as well as the demo versions are killer. They also covered Slayer's Raining Blood. The drums sound awesome throughout the songs but especially on that cover song. There are also remixes on Joe Black, those remind me of Fear Factory. So a touch of death, industrial and thrash metal is present, something for everybody.
Xuthus:Boy, this is a weird release.. There are a couple of new tracks, some old demo cuts, techno remixes(?!) and a Slayer cover. The new songs are really good and fast, the demo songs are even better than the CD versions, and the Slayer cover is great. The techno remixes are a fuckin joke. All in all, not bad. Give us a new album, Malevolent.
Monstrosity
Imperial Doom
Altholtas:A very extreme and brutal death metal band. The quality resembles Cannibal Corpse's new album "Vile" and why shouldn't it. George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher sang on "Imperial Doom" and is the new Cannibal Corpse singer. "Imperial Doom" also contains the guitarist Jon Rubin that is now with Malevolent Creation. Music is tight and fast with a couple of slow solos that sort of remind me of Brutality. A must check out.
Morbid Angel
Altars of Madness
Altholtas:The first album by Morbid Angel with ex-guitarist Richard Brunelle. This album would almost be considered black metal with their dark and MORBID rhythms. This also carries their first song that they had a video for, "Immortal Rites". CD version contains remixes of "Blashpemy", "Maze of Torment", and "Chapel of Ghouls". Tab available:"Immortal Rites"
Blessed are the Sick
Altholtas:A new complete change from Altars of Madness. They did a song that I thought was rather weak and pathetic which did not fit them, "In Remembrance". Now as I look who did that song and look at Covenant I no longer see that member(Richard Brunelle)hmm..... Killer songs range from "Fall From Grace" to the self title "leading the rats". Definitly worth buying. Tab available:"Fall From Grace" and "Day of Suffering"
Covenant
Altholtas:The best album so far by Morbid Angel with the help from the producer of previous Metallica crap(it's not his fault). Contains the unforgetable songs "Rapture" and "God of Emptiness" which each spawned a bad ass video. A must have for all death metal fans if you still have not heard of them.Tab available:All of "Rapture" except 2nd solo, and "God of Emptiness"
Domination
Shetait:... We shall dominate! Domination comes close to the previous Covenant release, however, the new songs have not the same morbidity. Don't get this wrong Domination is a great album with excellent song structures. But if I had a choice between this one and Covenant, I would pick Covenant.
Althotas:A bit different Morbid Angel compared to their previous albums. It sounds as though Trey Azagthoth has taken a fancy to using 7-string guitars. This album when you listen to it for the first time you sense something is missing, speed, punch, or just better riffs. It feels as though Morbid have slowed down compared to songs like "Rapture" and "Sworn to the Black". It is still Morbid Angel but with less action. Trey Dedicates one of the solos on "Where the Slime Live" to Eddie Van Halen, his guitar god.
Napalm Death
Fear, Emptiness, Despair
Altholtas:Some crazy, no care whatsoever for rhythm, blasting music. Certain parts of songs have a catchy yet small rhythm. They are an awesome band but why do they still use parts of the previous vocalist screaming? A killer song which there is a video to is called "Plague Rages". In my opinion they had more rhythm on "Harmony Corruption" and "Utopia Banished" but "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" is still worth getting. Stay away from albums such as "Scum" and "From Enslavement to Obliteration" unless you like very, very short songs with crap in them. Tab available:"Plague Rages"
Resurrection
Embalmed Existence
Althotas:Another kick ass speed death metal band. For every song, except one, there is a dwarf like character that says things like "you can swingle your mother in just for a buck, you can turn into something vile and corrupt" and "I seat at home eating human waste and drinking the urine from my dog, I feel insane when I do this but I like it!!" They did a cover of the Kiss song "War Machine" which rocks. Too bad it was not included on the Kiss dedication album. Higly Recommended.
Sinister
Diabolical Summoning
Althotas:Their name describes their music, some really heavy death metal. They put one hell of a show for having only one guitarist during the tour of this album. A must listen to. The artwork on the cover is totally wicked and SINISTER!!!
Suffocation
Breeding the Spawn
Althotas:This is their second full length album. The original version of "Breeding the Spawn" can be found here. They have a razor, buzzsaw sound with pounding drums. The production is well done but is by far better on "Pierced from Within". As the little sticker describes "Gut wrenching sonic torment from the most extreme band in death metal." Contains eight fast furious songs of destruction. Highly recommended.
Pierced from Within
Althotas:One of the best true death metal albums. They re-did "Breeding the Spawn" which sounds much better than on the previous album. The sound quality is superb with a much heavier and clearer sounding production like Deicide's "Upon the Cross". Their songs are perfectly coordinated each with two different melodies when put together you get a dark and heavy sound especially with their lower tuning. These are the gods of death thrash, with well structured and lightning fast rhythms they are sure to give us one hell of a live show. Tab available:"Breeding the Spawn"
Vader
Ultimate Incantation
Althotas:Progressive speed death metal sums up their debut album. Their rhythms are very catchy with a superb recording quality making it able to hear all instruments especially the guitars. Solo wise it's little to no structure. Maybe two songs have a small well structured solo. Their solos are mainly harmonics with a lunatic whammy bar. Overall this album is highly recommended. Tab available:"Dark Age"
