The brutality continues...
Angelcorpse
Hammer of Gods
Xuthus:The cult US black metal band Order from Chaos has come to it's end, but it's spirit now inhabits a new body, Angelcorpse!! Yeah, ok, the 'corpse' part of their name has been used 4,000 times already (Cannibal Corpse, Ripping Corpse, Shredded Corpse, Corpse with Extra Cheese), and I suppose the Angel too, but what is presented here is fucking GREAT, brutal death metal. Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" immediately springs to mind, but I think that Angelcorpse has taken that past feeling and turned it into something even better and catchier. Vocally, Pete Helkamp has a more high-ended growl that most others in this genre. The solos, like the rhythms, also seem influenced by Morbid Angel- that is, fucking sick, ultra fast runs and pick tapping that'll have you grinning like the Angel of Death himself. With tracks like "Lord of the Funeral Pyre" and "Sodomy Curse", you can ASSURE some seriously violent pit action.. Get this or continue to listen to all of those mediocre 'corpses'!!
Shetait:The Unholy Legions butchering innocent people, skeletons rising from their graves, fuck yeah!!! Angelcorpse took the sound of "Altars of Madness" and turned it into something even more brutal. The sound goes perfectly along with the medieval artwork. The entire album is killer. Bury all the other corpses and dig out the Angelcorpse!!!
At the Gates
Gardens of Grief
Shetait:Old school dow tuned death metal. Fuck yeah! Differs greatly from Slaughter of the Soul, still anything like the popular Swedish Detah acts. This MCD is a must have not just for AT THE GATES followers...
Benediction
Transcend the Rubicon
Althotas:A five piece band with a very powerful punch. This reminds me of Vader's album "The Ultimate Incantation". It still has it's own unique sound. Unlike Vader, Benediction tend to repeat their riffs more often. Solo wise they are about the same though Vader takes the axe in whammy-harmonic-insanity. Tab available: "Violation Domain"
Cancer
Death Shall Rise
Althotas:Another fine piece of death metal. Almost every band that James Murphy joins he brings in his superior guitar playing. The only band that he did not make such a big impact was on Testament(not to say they suck). Guitars have a fuzz type sound. It sounds like they increased the bass and lowered the distortion(kinda like the Obituary sound).
Carnage
Dark Recollections
Althotas:This was Dismember's project before they became Dismember. Band members from Dismember in Carnage are Matti Karki-vocals, David Blomqvist-lead guitar, and Fred Estby-drums. This is more into the brutal side of them. Sounds a lot like Dismember...hmm. You can also find on this album two different versions of Dismember song's: The extra on "Like an Everflowing Stream"..."Death Evocation" and the song "Torn Apart" which can be found on "Death is Just the Beginning II".
Deicide
Deicide
Althotas:The first album which brought forth the end of god. A very wicked and evil album, especially the song "Deicide". The riffs are not as complex/crazy as "Legion" but is well worth your "root of all evil" dollar. Some memorable songs include "Lunatic of God's Creation", "Oblivious to Evil", "Dead by Dawn", and the self title. The vocals are not as tormented as on their demo tracks or "Legion" but still have the demonic touch.
Dismember
Pieces
Shetait:Pure fucking Swedish death at it's best, no trends just straight forward blow your brains out death metal. Pieces is a mcd loaded with fast and furious riffs with the typical raw Swedish guitar sound, which shows similarities to Entombed. Listen to it over and over again until blood drips from your tormented ears... a killer album to get to know Dismember.
Xuthus:Ok, ok, so Dismember sound like Entombed. Personally, I don't give a damn because they blow Entombed away. This has to be one of the greats among death metal releases. The guitars remind me of fucking meatgrinders, because they are so raw and tuned so low. The vocalist sounds like he has just had his throat slit and is screaming in bloody rage. This is a great EP that is made more intense by it's short length.
Like an Everflowing Stream
Althotas:This is Dismember's first full length album. A special appearance was made by Nicke Andersson of Entombed. He did all the leads on the album except on "Overide of the Overture" which in my opinion was one of the only leads that actually stuck in my head.. Although the production is not as great as "Indecent & Obscene" or "Massive Killing Capacity" this album is well worth your decapitated dollar.
Indecent & Obscene
Althotas:This is in my opinion the best Dismember album. The cover is truly tasty. The best production with some killer Dismembering tunes. Dismember did all the solos on this album which in my opinion rock. They can structure some of the best solos that can make you feel the goove. Tab available: "Dreaming in Red"
Massive Killing Capacity
Althotas:The third installment from the Swedish kings. They got a heavier yet more melodic sound to their songs. They tuned a lot lower than on "Indecent & Obscene". Tab available: "I Saw Them Die"
Gorefest
The Eindhoven Insanity
Althotas:This is the best live album I have heard. It was recorded at "Dynamo Open Air" which is Holland's bigges metal festival on May 5, 1993 in front of 45,000 screaming fans. The production sounds so crisp and clear that it doesn't even sound live and to add more to it they used a low tuning. The solos are very clear and have feeling behind them. The vocals are completely brutal. Gorefest sounds best live. This is one album any Gorefest fan should not pass up. Tab Available:"The Mass Insanity"
Incantation
Upon the Throne of Apocalypse
Shetait:Hail the Gods of downtuned death metal. The instrumental incantations provided by the guitars are doomy at some parts and followed by fast grinding riffs, but always unbelievably heavy. The vocal summonings are provided by Satan himself. His natural voice sounds even deeper than one of those fake harmonizers. Incantation provided some really heavy tracks, but don't crank it up, unless you wish to summon the Incantation Demon into your room.
Kataklysm
The Temple of Knowledge
Shetait:Experiencing Kataklysm live and seeing The Awakener on Death is Just the Begining convinced me to buy one of their albums. Some might say that the music sounds like crap, but to me it sounds more like organized Canadian chaos. It don't really pay attention to the drums or riffs since they are kinda in the background. The true power of The Temple of Knowledge is the insane vocalist. The lyrics are written in English and an ancient language. All songs have more than just one vocal track at different pitches a la Glen Benton on Legion only by far more insane. Buyers beware this is really extreme music if you're a wimp or poseur you will not be able to enjoy this album... 666 first!!!
Kingdom of Dead
Kingdom of Dead
Shetait:During the recording of this album the band consisted of 7 members. Therefore the tracks have lots of variety. K.O.D. has quiet a few neat intros, twelve string acoustic guitars and keyboards. The guitars and drums sound pretty heavy, but they are nothing special. The vocals are really weak on some tracks, but since there are two lead vocalists and two backup vocalists the sound changes quickly. Overall this is an alright album.
Napalm Death
Utopia Banished
Althotas:One of the best Napalm albums ever. This album carries a totally brutal sound with growling vocals as vicious as a wild dog. This album has a video for the song "The World Keeps Turning". They also have their bass(sounds like to me) with a low tuning and distortion which gives it its "sub-end vexation". Tab available:"The World Keeps Turning"
Xuthus:I don't think I have ever liked Napalm Death. Their riffing was never something to get up and scream about, and their lyrics (of a socio-political nature) drove me away quickly. Nevertheless, this was one of the first extreme recordings that I ever owned, and it forever changed my views on the boundaries of music. And it was pretty cool to let an average guy hear the vocals and go, "is their singer a volcano?!"
Diatribes
Althotas:This is their follow up album to "Fear, Emptiness, Despair". I have to say it's not as intense and brutal as "Fear...This is one of the few bands that have kept the same sound in their vocalist. The vocals have had the same sound since "Utopia Banished" which is both good and bad. Some memorable brutal songs:"Ripe for the breaking" which has a very cool switch between distortion and clean channel on guitar and "Cold Forgiveness". Any Napalm fan should definetely get this album.
Obituary
The End Complete
Althotas:A very classic death metal album. The return of Allen West on lead guitar. This is Allen West's second to last album before he joins Six Feet Under. Two pounding but very repeatitious songs are "Killing Time" and "The End Complete". They also have a video for "The End Complete". Tab available:"Killing Time" and "The End Complete"
Xuthus:The year is 1992. A young man, with a fresh appetite for blood caused by such bands as Sepultura, Napalm Death, and other extreme acts of the early 90's decides to check out Obituary. "Wow," he says to himself, "The vocals are inhuman screams, the riffing is like a soundtrack to a zombie movie." Yes, I was impressed.
Cause of Death
Althotas:Obituary loses lead guitarist, Allen West and gains one of the best death metal guitarist in my opinion, James Murphy. Truly the best album of Obituary to date. In the Obituary style they never include lyrics but did include a sort of summary of what he says in the songs in a short paragraph.
Six Feet Under
Haunted
Althotas:This is Chris Barne's new band. It also includes Allen West former lead guitarist from Obituary. To put it in simple terms this album has the same sound of Obituary with the brutal vocals from Cannibal Corpse. This album tends to be very repetitious though. The few guitar solos are in the same basic structure as they were in Obituary. In my opinion Chris would of been better off in Cannibal, but hey what can you do when you are kicked out? Yet this album is still worth checking out.
Alive and Dead
Xuthus:Following their killer debut of heavy death, Six Feet gives us even more cool shit. This disc contains two new tracks, a cover, and four live tracks. The live tracks sound like you would expect: good mix, although a bit faster and rougher than the album version. The new songs are all good: "Insect" shakes your booty with a Black Sabbath-y stony groove; the twisted riff from "Drowning" brings to mind lungs helplessly filling with water; and the last track, "Grinder", is a Judas Priest cover done in a rocking fashion. If you liked the first Six Feet release, or any form of mid-paced death metal, definitely pick this one up.
Althotas:A more brutal follow up to "Haunted". This album contains 4 live tracks which in my opinion sound better than the recorded versions. "Beneath A Black Sky" is totally pounding. The drums on the live tracks are even heavier than on the recorded version which makes me wanna stomp some ass and mosh. This song tends to remind me of Obituary's "The End Complete" although these guys hardly ever do solos. This is a much better album to get to know Six Feet Under. The cover "Grinder" is totally rockin.
Suffocation
Human Waste
Althotas:One of the most brutal albums. The distortion on this album is so heavy and sharp it will cut through you like a scalpel through flesh. The production is not as great but the songs rip. On the CD version you can find an extra track, "Human Waste". What I also found was the song "Synthetically Revived" which is also on their newest album "Pierced From Within" yet on their new album it does not mention it's a remix. The list of songs on this album are as follows...1)"Infecting the Crypts 2)"Synthetically Revived" 3)"Mass Obliteration" 4)"Catatonia" 5)"Jesus Wept" 6)*CD bonus "Human Waste". Highly recommended for the Suffocation fan.
