The Good News...
I'm On the Waiting List!
I started out calling the closest VW
dealer to me (Brockman VW in Greenville, SC) the sales person that I spoke
with was Robert (didn't get his last name and had to ask for his first).
I introduced myself and gave the city where I live and tell Robert
that I am inquiring about a '98 Beetle and need information on pricing
and delivery. He tells me how many people are on the list,
and how many cars they get a month, required amount of deposit ($1,000.00)
and if I would like to "Order" a car it will take about the same amount
of time as getting on the list. I ask Robert about "Add-Ons"
and have to explain this question. Add-Ons= ADDITIONAL DEALER MARK
UP! He explains No Additional Dealer Markup. The
only item they they add to the price of the car is "Paint Protection" and
the cost is $595.00. And my comment at this point is, "Don't
Want Any Paint Protection Package" and start to ask if the paint has any
Warranty on it. At this point I hear a "CLICK", and I
think we must have gotten cut off. NOT, the extremely rude
(I'll be nice) salesman Robert HUNG UP on me. Not a
sir, there's not a option on the "Paint Protection" (package that we intend
on making you pay for so I WILL MAKE MORE ON THE DEAL, that you'll never
need anyway).
When I realized that he had Hung UP, I wanted to call back and talk very Ugly to him. I took
a minute and made a rational decision... Do you Really Want
a NEW BEETLE? Yes, so I call back ( I'm paying for the long distance
charge) and ask for the manager over the salesman. The receptionist
checks to see if he's in, she returns and says he currently busy
but, she'll be glad to take my name and number and have him return
the call. I had all intentions of switching salesmen and hopefully
starting over. Well, guess what Perry Johnson the manager
never bothered to return the call.
The next day I call the second choice Vic
Bailey in Spartainburg S.C. and spoke to salesman Barry Threadgill.
Barry seems to be very knowledgeable and honest right from the start.
(I've dealt with more than my share of car salesmen that are full of it
& I didn't get this impression from him.) So, he explains the
Beetle information, waiting list, pricing etc. I ask Barry, "What
Add Ons"? And he reply's, "No Add Ons". Not even Paint
Protection Package? Barry, "Nope"! At this point I tell
him I'll be there before Friday!
I arrive at Vic Bailey just after lunch
(75 mile drive). The dealership is very maintained and clean, go
inside and a red Beetle is sitting on the left side of the showroom.
Spend a few minutes looking at it and pay the deposit and drive home.
I'm hoping for less than the specified delivery time since I wasn't so
picky about color, no trading or financing.
Thanks Barry and Vic Bailey!
If you're In South
Carolina I would suggest calling
Vic Bailey VW!
