Chapter 19: Tender Moments

"There you are!" Cairo exclaimed as she walked out into the backyard. She had finally escaped Brian's attempts at keeping her occupied and went looking for Nick.

"Yeah, here I am, Kay. Are you having a good time?" he asked, looking over at her. The moonlight was catching in her eyes, making them shine endearingly.

"I don't know how you can tour with these guys and get anything done! They are hilarious! I'd be laughing 24/7!" she exclaimed, walking over to stand beside him.

"Yeah, it's a quite a comedy of errors. And we'll be doing it all over again pretty soon," Nick said, wistfully.

"Yeah, I know. You must be excited," she said, looking away from him so that he wouldn't catch her sudden wave of despair. Nick had been her lifeline these past few weeks; she had no idea what she was going to do without him.

"Yeah. We get into our heavy rehearsals tomorrow. Basically, my life is theirs!" he said, and then explained his hectic schedule.

"I'm going to miss you, Carter," she said suddenly, looking straight into his eyes.

"Yeah. I mean, I'm going to miss you too, Kay," he said. They stood there in silence for a moment, just looking at one another, quiet in their own thoughts. Suddenly a snicker made them turn their attention towards the window.

Pressed up against the glass were four familiar faces, all smiling. Nick and Cairo looked at one another and burst out laughing.

"So, what time's your flight?" Cairo asked quietly. She and Nick were sitting underneath her willow tree, watching the glow of the setting sun descend under the waters.

"Early tomorrow," he answered, gazing off. He lifted his arm up in invitation and she accepted, pillowing her head against his chest.

"I don't know what I'm going to do with out you," she said honestly.

"Yes you do. You're going to write the great American novel while I'm gone, you know you are. You won't have me around to take up all your time," he said, resting his chin on top of her head.

"Ahem, it's great CANADIAN novel. But seriously, I'm going to go insane without you around. You've been so great…about everything. I couldn't ask for a better neighbor," she said, turning her head to look him in the eye.

"Well, I do take pride in being neighborly, but I'm going to miss you a lot Kay," he said.

"Well, just have fun, enjoy your tour and then hurry home to all those that need you," she said, blinking back her tears. She lay her head back against his head and listened to the beating of his heart.
