Chapter 20: Snow and Surprises
Two months later…
"So, Mr. Carter, how do you like my home town?" Cairo said.
"Not bad, Kay. I'd like it better if you were here, but from what I've seen of it, Toronto's not that bad, despite it's obvious fault," Nick said, smiling. He was in his hotel room in Toronto, on the phone with Cairo.
"Oh, you're such a flatterer! Bet you say that to all the girls!" she said, laughing.
"No, just you! Where are you right now? Cell phone?" he asked, picking up background static that indicated that cellular was a possibility.
"Yup, my trusty little cell phone. This thing is as ancient as the dinosaurs…and about as big as them, too! So, what room are we in this time, Mr. Carter?" she asked.
"419 this time, Kay. What is it, the fourth time I've gotten this number? I was hoping for something a little higher, like 5 or 6 something to compete with my previous record," he said, talking about a game they had made of all the hotel room numbers that he had stayed in while on tour.
"Trusty old 419!"
"You didn't answer my question, Kay. Where are you?" he asked. There was a slight pause, and a knock at the door.
"Better answer the door, Nick. Never know who it could be," she said. He frowned suspiciously.
"You heard that? Where are you Kay?" he said, walking towards the door.
As he opened the door, he almost dropped the phone as he heard her say, "Right outside your door!" And it was true, she was standing there, beat up jeans, navy blue sweatshirt, earphones around her neck, wild hair pulled into a messy bun, all of it, all Cairo, right outside his door.
"You little devil!" he cried, as he pulled her into a hug.
"Don't crush the cell phone!" she exclaimed, as it got caught between the two of them.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, amazed, leading her into his hotel room.
"Why? Aren't you glad to see me?" she said, walking over to the window, and sighing at the view of the Toronto city skyline. "Quite a view we have here."
"Of course I'm glad to see you, but I'm completely blown away! When did you get into Toronto? How did you get here? Why are you here? How did you know where we're staying? More importantly, how did you get past security?" he asked, suspiciously.
"If I told you, I'd have to kill you! But to answer your other questions, an hour ago, by plane, to see you, and Brian," she said. He laughed.
"Brian, eh? His idea or yours?" he asked, looking at her. She was such a good sight for sore eyes. Tours were busy and exciting and a lot of fun, but they could also be lacking in the things that made everyday life so sweet.
"A little of column A, a little of column B and a little help from the Internet. Email is such a marvelous invention, you should try it sometime, Mr. Cellular-Phone-Bill-Must-Cost-Millions-Monthly. Seriously Nick, phones and snail mail are good ways to communicate, but it leaves much more to be desired. Brian got my email addy, sent me a message to say 'hi' and asking about which sights in T.O. were worthy of seeing. I sent back, saying I should show you guys myself, and everything just fell into place," she explained.
"But again, how did you get past security?" he asked, amazing that she was able to explain the whole plan in just one breath.
"You're on a need to know basis, and right now, you don't need to know! So, crack out your hat and sunglasses, we have all of Toronto to do, and only four hours to do it in!" she exclaimed, pulling him out of his chair and out the door.

"I can't believe we've done five whole floors!" Nick exclaimed wearily.
"Believe, Nicky. And we have, what, two more to go?" she asked. He rolled his eyes, and took a swig of his Coke.
"Actually, I was hoping we could jet the shopping scene. I don't want to be noticed in a place that's so…crowded," he said, gesturing towards the crowd of people hovering in and around the food court.
"Hey, you're a regular Toronto-nian right now. No one will notice you. You're hair is covered, we've collectively bought out almost every store in here, and you ditched the sunglasses. Which by the way, are one of the biggest tip offs there is! No one wears sunglasses in the dead of winter, unless you're driving!" she said, shaking her head.
"Yeah, yeah. Okay, truthfully, I just want to go and play basketball or maybe some Playstation. The guys and I do shopping all the time. Believe me, a mall is a mall, no matter the continent or country," he said, rolling his eyes.
"Okay, point taken. But first, let's hit the one thing that's not on every continent or country," she said, grabbing his hand and leading him onward.
"Where do you get this energy? Or is it just brought on by extreme pleasure by torturing me?" he asked as she lead him through the crowded streets.
"Oh, it's the pleasure. Plus, I've been working steadily for two months, so it's about time I had fun, even if you aren't!" she exclaimed, then stopped abruptly. "There! That's it!"
"What? The hotel?" he asked incredulously.
"No, silly. Look around you, what do you see?" she asked as if it were the simplest question in the world.
"Not much, except for the hotel, a couple cars. Nothing fascinating," he said. She grinned wickedly.
"You're missing one big thin, Nick," she said, leaping forward, smashing a handful of snow into his face. "Snow!"
He was sputtering, trying to get the snow out of his face.
"Now it's on!" he said, grabbing a handful and chasing after her. She dodged him, and he slipped in the slippery snow and fell.
"You suck!" she called, kicking a pile of cold, wet snow in his direction. He jumped up and ran after her. She was screaming and laughing, and she ran away from him.
"Hey, Nickay! Why you picking on that little girl?" a voice called out. Nick turned around and saw the rest of his band mates.
"Because she's evil! Cairo!" he yelled threateningly when she assaulted him with a snowball while his attention was averted. That got the rest of them into the act. AJ attacked Brian from behind, who landed face first into a fluffy white heap, Howie, in return, got AJ while he was laughing at Brian, and Kevin (of all things) aided Cairo in her attack on Nick. Soon the area in front of the hotel was a battle ground, full of laughter and flying snow.

"You'd better hope that I don't get sick," Nick warned, as he dried of his soaked hair with a towel.
"Why? Well, other than the fact that I'd be murdered by every single fan at your concert," Cairo said, answering her own question. "You can't get sick from playing in the snow. If so, I'd have been dead long ago!" she said, shaking the remnants of their fight out of her hair.
"Are you coming to the concert tonight?" Nick asked.
"Yeah, Brian got me some stellar seats and a little thing called a backstage pass. So you'd better be fantastic tonight, the pressures on!" she said, changing her wet socks for dry ones.
"Well, I gotta be in the lobby in ten minutes…So, I'll see you at the concert?" he asked.
"Was the conversation we just had completely one-sided?" she asked.
"So I'll see you later, Kay! Have fun tonight!" he called over his shoulder.
"You too!" she called back, as he closed the door behind him.
